Fiction gave me the freedom to go beyond the language of diagnosis and into the language of the soul. Charlotte came to life as a mirror of so many people I’ve met in therapy — and in myself — who learned to live while quietly unraveling. Through her, I could explore the paradox of healing: that what we fear will destroy us often becomes what awakens us.

Your book focuses on transforming trauma rather than just coping. How is this approach different from typical self-help advice?

Traditional self-help often teaches us to manage symptoms — to think positively, to control, to move on. But trauma work isn’t about control; it’s about contact. Healing asks us to approach what hurts, to listen to it, to integrate what was once fragmented. Coping helps you function; transformation helps you evolve. My approach draws from both neuroscience and depth psychology to bridge the body’s survival wisdom with the psyche’s longing for meaning.

How can someone start turning past pain into a source of growth today?

By softening the impulse to “fix.” Pain is not a problem to solve; it’s a teacher to understand. Begin by asking not “Why is this happening to me?” but “What is this showing me?” Pain illuminates where our energy is trapped — in shame, fear, or old identity. When we stay with it long enough to learn its language, pain becomes revelation. Growth begins when we allow ourselves to feel fully, without rushing toward resolution.

You talk about “detaching with purpose.” What does that mean, and how can readers practice it?

Detachment is not emotional withdrawal — it’s emotional wisdom. To detach with purpose means to step back just far enough to see clearly. It’s a way of protecting your peace without abandoning your empathy.

Practically, this looks like pausing before reacting, observing your emotions without fusing with them, and asking: “Is this my truth, or my trauma responding?” Detachment with purpose allows love to mature — it becomes grounded, discerning, and self-respecting.

Aligning with values is a key theme—how can someone reconnect with their authentic self after trauma?

Trauma teaches us to survive by becoming who the world needs, not who we are. Healing asks us to reverse that — to remember the self we buried to stay safe. Reconnection begins with curiosity: What feels nourishing? What feels constrictive? What values feel like oxygen?

When we start honoring what feels alive instead of what feels expected, we begin to rebuild authenticity. The goal isn’t reinvention — it’s re-membering: bringing back the parts of ourselves that were exiled in order to belong.

Many fear facing trauma will make them feel worse. How can readers safely navigate that discomfort?

That fear is intelligent. It’s the body’s way of saying, “Not yet.” Healing must happen in proportion to safety.

The nervous system needs to learn that it can survive feeling. We do that through pacing, grounding, and co-regulation — small doses of truth held in a field of safety. We don’t dive into trauma; we build a bridge toward it. Over time, the very sensations that once signaled danger become signals of aliveness again.

What’s a common misconception about trauma that you hope your book clears up?

That trauma is an event from the past. It’s not — it’s the ongoing imprint left in the present. Trauma lives in how we breathe, relate, and protect ourselves long after the moment is over. The work isn’t about erasing what happened; it’s about reclaiming the part of you that got frozen there. Healing is not the opposite of pain — it’s the expansion of who you are beyond it.

How has your own journey influenced the insights you share in this book?

This book is both clinical and personal. Every concept in it has been tested not just in my work with clients, but in my own becoming. I’ve known what it feels like to lose direction — to live inside a version of yourself that no longer fits.

Writing The Fire That Makes Us was a way of mapping that in-between space — where intellect gives way to surrender, and where the soul takes the lead. I don’t write from the mountaintop of healing. I write from the middle of the fire, where meaning is forged.

You often speak on nervous system regulation and resilience—how do these ideas help in transforming trauma?

Regulation is not about staying calm — it’s about staying connected. When the nervous system feels safe, the brain can integrate new experience. Without that safety, insight alone doesn’t reach the body.

Resilience is the capacity to return to presence after being pulled into chaos. It’s the art of reentering your body, again and again, until it becomes home. Trauma recovery isn’t about never getting triggered; it’s about learning how to come back from it more swiftly, more compassionately, and more whole.

If readers could take just one lesson from Charlotte’s story, what would you want it to be?

That the fire you fear will consume you is the same one that will cleanse you.

Charlotte’s story is an invitation to trust the intelligence of what hurts — to understand that pain, when faced with awareness, doesn’t just destroy; it refines.

The fire doesn’t burn to punish — it burns to purify. When you walk through it consciously, you don’t come out smaller; you come out illuminated.

Visit our Reading Essentials section to discover the best bookshelves, reading chairs, book lights for reading at night, and more!

Receive top book recommendations directly in your inbox.

The Fire That Makes Us: Unveiling the Transformative Power of Trauma is a compassionate and practical guide that follows one woman’s journey through buried pain to show readers how confronting, understanding, and transforming trauma can ignite clarity, resilience, and lasting personal growth.
