Yes, you’ve got all the incredible nature, awe-inspiring vistas and the Blue Lagoon<\/a> – but there’s so much more to Iceland than just its gorgeous natural landscapes<\/a>. There is a whole heap of the best towns in Iceland… all with their heritage, stories and stunning natural landscapes that surround them.<\/p>\n

You’ll likely start your journey at Keflavik Airport (about 30 minutes from the capital) and head out across Iceland, stopping off at all the stunning spots and booking these iconic hotels<\/a> that Iceland has.<\/p>\n

Now, it’s a given and one of the best things to do for sure, but just remember not to forget about the little towns along the way. Iceland has a whole host of rugged towns that I just know you’ll fall in love with.<\/p>\n

Take a look at some of the best towns in Iceland, you’re going to love the adventure.<\/p>\n

1.) Vik<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Vik is the second-largest and one of the best towns in Iceland (particularly on the south coast) and is a great spot to stop when driving around the country’s ring road.<\/p>\n

Here, you’ll find a few tasty restaurants like Berg, which serves the best Arctic char in the south of Iceland. Make sure to finish off with some Icelandic skyr for a sweet treat.<\/p>\n

Yes, I know. Technically, Reykjavik<\/a> is a city and not one of the towns in Iceland, but I just couldn’t resist including it.<\/p>\n

There’s plenty to do in the city, and I’d recommend spending around two days in the capital exploring some of the best that Iceland has to offer.<\/p>\n

For a lovely gift or a treat for yourself, pop into the Handknitting Association of Iceland, based on Skolav\u00f6rdustigur in Reykjavik<\/a>. Here, you’ll find loads of homemade, gorgeous, knitted goodies that are so cute.<\/p>\n

3.) Husavik<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Known as the Whale Capital of Iceland, Husavik is one of the best towns in Iceland to spot whales.<\/p>\n

Now, it might seem like quite a trek to get to Husavik, but it’s the perfect place to visit if you want to head out whale watching (between March and December) where you might be lucky enough to see Humpback, Minke and Blue whales.<\/p>\n

Yes, Husavik itself is tiny but well worth a visit if you’re driving the 250 km-long Diamond Circle route.<\/p>\n

Make sure to visit the Gamli Baukur Restaurant for some tasty grub and ride some of the famous Icelandic horses, just outside the town itself.<\/p>\n

4.) Akureyri<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Although technically a city, Akureyri feels very much like a town and one of the best towns in Iceland at that! With around 18,000 people calling it home, you’ll find loads of stuff to do.<\/p>\n

Perched on the north coast, Akureyri is an excellent stopover for those doing the entire ring road circuit, and there are lots of little finds to see while you’re there. Make sure to stop off at the Lauf\u00e1s Turf Homes and visit the Arctic Botanical Gardens and the stunning Akureyri Church, too.<\/p>\n

Best of all, if you’re a skier, you can head to the relatively close Hl\u00ed\u00f0arfjall to swish down the slopes. There’s much more snow up this end of Iceland, so you’ll have more reliable skiing conditions.<\/p>\n

5.) Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur is one of the teeny tiny towns of Iceland, located on the east coast Fjords, and one that’s quite easy to miss.<\/p>\n

Once here, though, you\u2019ll find epic landscapes, grand cliffs and thrashing sea waves that are just so gorgeous to see at any time of the year.<\/p>\n

Selfoss sits just over an hour’s drive southeast of Reykjavik and is home to Olfusa waterfall, outdoor pools and walking trails along the Olfusa River.<\/p>\n

It makes a great stop on any Golden Circle tour and one that’s dominated by the natural geography that’s all around it. If you visit in the summer months, see the cute Sumar \u00e1 Selfossi festival that involves lots of homemade goodies, colourful ribbons and fireworks.<\/p>\n

Once here, head over to Fr\u00f6ken Selfoss<\/a>, which serves some delicious traditional Icelandic meals. We loved their Kleinur for dessert. It’s an Icelandic doughnut that is so tasty. <\/p>\n

Oh, and next door is the Food Market<\/a> (housed in the Old Dairy), which has a handful of little cafes, eateries and bars that are well worth visiting for lunch or even an evening of drinks. We loved it. <\/p>\n

7.) Keflavik<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Yes, most people know Keflavik as the ‘airport town’, but it’s so much more than that!<\/p>\n

Instead of heading straight into Reykjavik, take a 15-minute car trip to the Blue Lagoon<\/a> and spend a day (or overnight in their hotel). It’s the perfect place for a dip, helping make Keflavik (and its surroundings) one of the best towns in Iceland to experience.<\/p>\n

Staying<\/a> overnight in the Blue Lagoon<\/a> was one of the best things we did, especially as you get to use these lagoons late in the evening<\/a>… just floating whilst watching the northern lights above. Honestly, without sounding cheesy… it was magical!<\/p>\n

Don’t forget, while in Keflavik, make sure to see the Anchor Monument, Stekkjarkot and Viking World (if the weather takes a turn for the worse).<\/p>\n

Plus, you can join this hike nearby to see the erupting Fagradalsfjall Volcano,<\/a> which is <\/span>incredible to witness. It’s about a 15-minute drive from the Blue Lagoon (and then a hike). You’ll love it. <\/p>\n

8.) Holmavik<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of the smaller but still one of the best towns in Iceland has to be Holmavik. Sitting on Iceland\u2019s Westfjords, a remote area of countryside surrounded mainly by horses and sheep, it’s one gorgeous area to explore.<\/p>\n

Whilst you’re here, pop into the Museum of Sorcery & Witchcraft to learn about the local witches from the 17th<\/sup> century. For a tasty bite of local food, pop into Cafe Riis, which serves the most delicious cod cheek and homemade fish soup. <\/p>\n

9.) Hellnar<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hellnar is a small dot on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula that\u2019s considered the oldest fishing town in the region.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s here that you\u2019ll find the totally awe-inspiring Hellnar Sea Cliffs, Budir Black Church and an array of native birds, including kittiwakes, gulls and the Arctic Tern.<\/p>\n

Eskifj\u00f6r\u00f0ur is a tiny little town perched on the eastern side of Iceland and quite remote compared to some of the larger towns in the southwest.<\/p>\n

Once there, pop over to the relatively near Mj\u00f3eyri, where you’ll find the cutest little guest house and charming residence with the best views of this area of Iceland. It almost feels like another world!<\/p>\n
