Iceland is a beautiful country to visit and one of the most unique when it comes to the most epic places to see<\/a>! And, although a first-time visit to Iceland is an exciting prospect, there’s a heap of planning, logistics and bookings to be made to ensure a nice smooth trip. This is exactly why I wanted to share some of the best things to do on a first trip to Iceland. <\/p>\n

Honestly, the whole country is as diverse as you can imagine, with the most incredible hikes<\/a>, quaint towns<\/a>, dramatic landscapes<\/a> and stunning ice caves<\/a> all within one beautiful country.<\/p>\n

Now, as it\u2019s your first visit, you\u2019ll probably be thinking about starting in the southwest of Iceland. This is where nearly all international flights arrive and depart, so it’s a good starting point for your adventure. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now, most of these are within a 5-hour drive from Iceland\u2019s international airport, Keflavik and easily reached by main arterial roads.  <\/span>This all makes it a bit easier when seeing the bigger picture of how much driving is involved. <\/span><\/p>\n

1.) Bathe in the Blue Lagoon<\/b><\/h3>\n

Now, the lagoon can get busy, so book your tickets in advance<\/a> and make sure to visit at less busy times. Usually, the first thing in the morning is a little quieter. <\/span><\/p>\n

Also, If you arrive in winter, you can head to the Blue Lagoon<\/a> and watch the sunrise, a magical experience that is well worth doing!<\/span><\/p>\n

Afterwards, if you’re looking for an adventure, hike to the erupting Fagradalsfjall Volcano that’s only a 15-minute drive from the Blue Lagoon. Then, once here, you can join this hiking trail<\/a> and see the most incredible eruption in Iceland.<\/p>\n

2.) Spot the northern lights<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

No visit to Iceland is complete without (at least looking for) the Northern Lights<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve rented a car, it\u2019s best to head out of the towns and head for some of the darker rural areas. We drove about 30 minutes out of Reykjavik to see them clearly in the dark and within the national park itself. <\/span><\/p>\n

The months around March and September are the brightest for the northern lights, but you can be lucky and see them at any time of the night. <\/span><\/p>\n

When the lights are really strong, you\u2019ll be able to watch them prance overhead regardless of the (small amounts of) light pollution from the towns. Always keep your eyes peeled for those dancing swirls.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, you can book this incredible Northern Lights tour<\/a>, which is great if you don’t drive (or just don’t fancy driving). The tour picks up from Reykjavik and takes around 4 hours. It’s incredible. Best of all, they will know all the places to go to avoid light pollution. <\/p>\n

3.) Go Whale Watching<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

There is an abundance of whales that call the shores of Iceland home. Book this incredible whale-watching tour<\/a> that departs from Reykjavik and try your luck at spotting some of these majestic animals in the wild. <\/span><\/p>\n

Taking roughly 3-4 hours, it\u2019s the perfect way to see whales in their natural habitat. Just be aware that sometimes the tours can overrun a little, so have a buffer for any plans just in case.  <\/span>Oh, and be sure to book your tour in advance<\/a>. There are few places where the heat of geothermal activity can bake bread in the ground. <\/span><\/p>\n

Entry is free to Sk\u00f3gafoss, and if you arrive early in the morning or late afternoon, you\u2019ll notice the crowds dissipate, leaving the waterfall just for you. It’s lovely. <\/span><\/p>\n

10.) Explore the J\u00f6kuls\u00e1rl\u00f3n Glacier Lagoon<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

The glacier lake of J\u00f6kuls\u00e1rl\u00f3n<\/a> is probably the farthest east you\u2019ll travel out of all these places (it\u2019s about 5.5 hours from Keflavik airport) but well worth seeing if you\u2019ve made it as far as Vik. <\/span><\/p>\n

Horseback riding<\/a> is a beautiful experience in Iceland, especially with the friendly Icelandic horses that are so full of character. <\/span><\/p>\n
