Rama II roadworks paused for Songkran, disruption to return
Roadworks on Rama II have been temporarily paused for Songkran, with main lanes reopened to ease holiday travel, but further disruption is expected once the festival ends.
The Department of Highways confirmed that construction linked to Intercity Motorway No. 82 (M82), including sections of the elevated Bang Khun Thian–Ban Phaeo route, has been suspended to reduce congestion during one of Thailand’s busiest travel periods.
Officials said key structural installation work has already been completed in the affected areas, with inspections carried out to ensure safety before reopening the main carriageways. Both inbound and outbound lanes on Rama II have now been restored, allowing traffic to move more freely over the Songkran holiday.
The move is aimed at supporting motorists travelling to their home provinces or tourist destinations, as traffic volumes typically increase significantly during the festival.
Disruption to return after Songkran
Despite the temporary relief, roadworks on Rama II are set to resume shortly after Songkran, with traffic diversions planned in several locations.
From 20 April onwards, sections of the main route will again be partially closed to allow for the continued installation of elevated motorway structures. Traffic diversions will be introduced at kilometre markers 26 and 30+500.
The works will take place during daytime hours only, between 05:00 and 20:00, in an effort to limit disruption outside peak travel times. However, motorists are still likely to face delays, particularly as traffic volumes remain high in the weeks following the holiday period.
The Department of Highways said it aims to complete the remaining work and fully reopen all main lanes before the new school term begins in mid-May. The timeline is intended to reduce the impact on daily commuters and regular road users.
Drivers are being advised to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time once construction resumes.
