Court rules d4vd will stand trial in teen murder case

A Los Angeles judge has ruled that there is sufficient evidence for singer d4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, to stand trial in the murder case of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The decision followed a five-day preliminary hearing during which prosecutors presented forensic evidence, text messages and witness testimony related to the teenager’s death. Burke has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
According to court proceedings, Burke is facing charges including first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, and unlawful mutilation of human remains. Prosecutors allege he killed Rivas Hernandez in April 2025 after she threatened to expose their alleged illegal relationship, which they claim could have damaged his rapidly rising music career.
The court heard that the victim’s remains were discovered in September 2025 inside the trunk of a Tesla registered to Burke after authorities investigated a foul odour coming from the vehicle. Medical examiners later ruled the teenager’s death a homicide. Prosecutors also presented evidence they say links Burke to the crime, including DNA findings, electronic communications and purchases allegedly connected to the disposal of the body.
During the hearing, prosecutors also introduced text messages exchanged between Burke and Rivas Hernandez that allegedly discussed pregnancy and abortion. Additional evidence included explicit photographs recovered from Burke’s phone and digital accounts, which prosecutors argue support their claim that the pair had an illegal sexual relationship before the teenager’s death.
Burke’s defence team argued that prosecutors had failed to establish evidence of premeditated murder and maintained that the singer is innocent. His lawyers insisted the evidence presented does not prove he intentionally killed the teenager and said they will continue to challenge the prosecution’s case at trial. Burke has consistently denied all allegations since his arrest earlier this year.
After reviewing the evidence, the judge ruled that prosecutors had presented enough material for the case to proceed before a jury. The decision means Burke will now face a full criminal trial, where prosecutors will be required to prove their allegations beyond a reasonable doubt. He remains in custody without bail pending further proceedings.
The case has attracted widespread attention because of Burke’s rapid rise in the music industry before his arrest. Prosecutors contend that the alleged murder was committed to prevent Rivas Hernandez from revealing details of their relationship, while the defence maintains that Burke has been wrongly accused.
Burke is expected to be arraigned on August 31, with the trial likely to begin within the following weeks. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted. Meanwhile, the family of Celeste Rivas Hernandez has welcomed the judge’s ruling, saying they are relieved the case will now move forward to trial.

Australia defends social media ban for under-16s

The Australian government has defended its ban on social media use by children under the age of 16, despite new data showing that most teenagers continue to access restricted platforms months after the law came into effect. The legislation, introduced in December, was designed to protect children from the harmful effects of social media on their mental and physical health. The policy attracted international attention, with Australia becoming the first country to implement such a nationwide restriction on underage social media users. A recent report by Australia’s online safety regulator found that more than eight in ten teenagers under the age of 16 were still using social media platforms three months after the restrictions became operational. The findings have highlighted the challenges governments face in enforcing digital regulations. Despite the report, Australian authorities insisted that the policy remains an important step toward creating a safer online environment for children. Officials said the law has already influenced public discussion about online safety and encouraged greater awareness among parents, educators and technology companies. Assistant Minister for Productivity, Competition, Charities and Treasury Andrew Leigh said the government never expected complete compliance immediately after the law came into force. He explained that many public safety laws require time before they achieve widespread compliance. Leigh said the government considers the legislation successful because it has changed the national conversation about children’s use of social media and encouraged stronger action to protect young users from harmful online content. He noted that millions of social media accounts had already been closed or restricted since the implementation of the law. According to the minister, this demonstrates that the legislation is already having an impact, even if some teenagers continue to access online platforms. The government also stressed that technology companies have a major responsibility to ensure compliance with the new rules. Officials said digital platforms must strengthen age verification systems and take effective measures to prevent underage users from creating or maintaining accounts. Regulatory authorities are continuing to assess how well social media companies are implementing the restrictions. They are also examining additional measures that could improve enforcement and ensure technology firms meet their legal obligations. Experts say the latest findings illustrate the complexity of regulating online platforms, particularly as social media has become deeply integrated into the daily lives of young people. They note that effective enforcement will require cooperation between governments, parents, schools and technology companies.

UK government unveils £130m boost for zero-emission vehicle technology

The British government has announced a joint public-private investment package worth nearly £130 million to advance zero-emission vehicle technologies across the United Kingdom. The funding model combines almost £65 million in public investment alongside matching contributions from private automotive industry partners. Under the initiative, nearly £50 million in government grants will go directly to car manufacturers and research institutions to develop and scale clean vehicle tech. An additional £17 million has been allocated to nine projects targeting connected and automated mobility, including advanced sensors, brake-by-wire systems, and artificial intelligence simulation platforms. Industry Minister Blair McDougall stated that the package aims to secure the future of British manufacturing, noting that the country is determined to ensure next-generation vehicles are designed and produced domestically. Tarar proposes mentors for young actors

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has proposed launching a mentorship programme for young actors following the controversy surrounding the alleged disrespectful treatment of veteran actor Mohammed Ahmed by fellow actor Fahad Sheikh. In a statement shared on X, Tarar described the reported incident as “highly deplorable” and said respect for senior artists must remain a core value of Pakistan’s entertainment industry. The minister said the proposed initiative would allow emerging actors to learn professional ethics, discipline and acting skills from experienced performers. He suggested that Mohammed Ahmed, given his decades-long contribution to television, would be well suited to lead the programme, or that a council of senior actors could oversee the initiative. Tarar also announced that he would soon convene a meeting of television artists and industry stakeholders to seek recommendations on establishing the mentorship programme. The controversy began after Mohammed Ahmed, during a recent podcast interview, recalled being mocked and humiliated by a younger lead actor while working on a television production. He described incidents in which the actor allegedly ridiculed him in front of colleagues and behaved disrespectfully during filming. Although Ahmed did not initially identify the individual, videos circulating on social media later linked actor Fahad Sheikh to the allegations. Responding to the criticism, Sheikh issued a public apology, saying that incomplete accounts of the incident had created a misleading narrative. He maintained that he had already apologised to Mohammed Ahmed privately before the issue gained widespread attention online. Sheikh also offered another public apology, acknowledging Mohammed Ahmed’s seniority and expressing hope that the veteran actor would accept his apology. He insisted that he had never intended to insult a senior colleague.

Emergency food distribution begins in Uganda as severe drought leaves 19 dead from hunger

The Ugandan government has initiated a large-scale emergency relief operation across the eastern Karamoja region following at least nineteen hunger-related deaths caused by prolonged drought and devastating crop failures. With approximately 1.5 million residents confronting acute food shortages and rising rates of malnutrition, parliament approved a emergency funding allocation of forty-five billion Ugandan shillings to procure and distribute over nine thousand tonnes of food aid over the coming two months. Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Sam Engola personally launched the distribution efforts in Kaabong district, assuring local communities that the state would oversee the delivery to ensure no starving household is left behind. The current environmental crisis marks the most severe dry spell to strike Karamoja in recent years, with the crucial rains failing completely since the start of the planting season in April. Health facilities across the region report a surge in children suffering from severe malnutrition, forcing desperate residents to seek low-paying, grueling work in informal gold-mining operations simply to purchase basic staples like maize and beans. The disaster comes amidst significant international aid reductions, particularly following severe budget cuts from donors such as USAID, which forced organisations like the World Food Programme to scale back assistance to over one million refugees in the country. In response, Ugandan officials and civil rights advocates emphasise that while emergency food distribution provides immediate life-saving relief, the government must prioritise long-term climate resilience, drought-resistant crops, and proper water infrastructure to permanently prevent recurring starvation in the region.

Pakistan’s Saqib and Jawad punch their way into GAMMA MMA finals

Pakistan has two fighters through to the finals of the GAMMA Asian MMA Championship 2026. Muhammad Saqib and Muhammad Jawad both delivered strong performances on Wednesday to book their places in the title matches of their respective weight categories. The event, formally known as the 2nd GAMMA Asian MMA Championships, is currently underway in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It runs from July 28 through August 2, 2026. The tournament is organized by the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts and brings together elite fighters from across the continent, spanning both youth and senior divisions, all competing for gold. Getting to the finals was not easy. Both Pakistani athletes had to get past tough opponents from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in earlier rounds. They did so by showing sharp technical skill, real determination, and a fighting spirit that stood out throughout the competition. Saqib will step into the Under-18 category final, where he will face a fighter from Kazakhstan. Jawad, meanwhile, has his own final lined up in the Under-16 category, also against a Kazakh opponent. This is not a new territory for Saqib, either. He already has an impressive résumé, having won gold at the GAMMA World MMA Championship back in 2024, along with several other international successes representing Pakistan. Their progress has not gone unnoticed back home. Zulfiqar Ali, who heads the Pakistan Mixed Martial Arts Federation, spoke highly of both fighters following their wins. He said the federation feels genuine pride in watching these young athletes compete, and he extended that praise to their coaches and the broader national team as well. According to Ali, both Saqib and Jawad have represented Pakistan with serious dedication. He pointed to their training and mental toughness as key reasons for their success so far in the tournament. He didn’t stop there, either. Ali went on to wish both fighters well ahead of their upcoming final bouts, saying the whole country would be cheering them on. He added that he expects both athletes to carry the same energy and focus into their finals that got them this far. Ali said he is confident they will continue performing at a high level, and that a strong showing could mean even more glory for Pakistan on the international stage.
