Monsoon rain due to enhanced southwest monsoon affecting 12 areas in Luzon

MANILA, Philippines – At least 12 areas in Luzon are experiencing monsoon rain on Saturday afternoon, August 29, as the enhanced southwest monsoon or habagat continues to affect the island.

On Saturday morning, the low pressure area (LPA) previously inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility was already located outside PAR. It was last located 640 kilometers north northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, with a “low” chance of developing into a tropical depression.

Another LPA being monitored outside PAR, which has a “high” chance of developing into a tropical depression, was last located 1,545 km east of extreme Northern Luzon. Once it enters PAR and strengthens, it will be called the local name Pilandok.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported monsoon rain due to the enhanced southwest monsoon in Metro Manila, Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, La Union, Benguet, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, and Cavite.

The southwest monsoon is also bringing occasional rain to Ilocos Norte, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro, scattered rain and thunderstorms to the rest of Luzon, Western Visayas, and Negros Island Region, and isolated rain showers or thunderstorms to the rest of Visayas.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Daniel James Villamil said heavy rain will continue to affect Metro Manila, most of Central Luzon, and portions of Southern Luzon over the weekend and until Monday. By Monday, there will be a shift in rainfall distribution, with heavy rain affecting Northern Luzon.

Saturday afternoon, August 29, to Sunday afternoon, August 30:

• Heavy to intense rain (100-200 millimeters): Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, La Union, Benguet, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Rizal, and Cavite
• Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm): Ilocos Norte, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro

Sunday afternoon, August 30, to Monday afternoon, August 31:

• Heavy to intense rain (100-200 mm): Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, and Bataan
• Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm): Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Nueva Vizcaya, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro

Monday afternoon, August 31, to Tuesday afternoon, September 1

• Heavy to intense rain (100-200 mm): Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, and Zambales
• Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm): Batanes, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Nueva Vizcaya, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Rizal, and Cavite
