Kieffer Alas stars as Ateneo storms back to beat Benilde

MANILA, Philippines – Kieffer Alas delivered the big hits and lifted Ateneo to a come-from-behind 81-78 win over St. Benilde in the Sweet 16 of the Pinoyliga Cup at the Blue Eagle Gym on Sunday, August 23.

Alas finished with 26 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists as the Blue Eagles stormed back from 13 points down to advance to the Elite Eight.

The Blazers led 48-35 before Ateneo rode on a 21-7 run bridging the second and third quarters to seize the upper hand, with Alas scoring 9 points during that stretch.

Alas capped that rally with a three-pointer to give the Blue Eagles a 56-55 lead.

It was also Alas who secured the victory for Ateneo as he sank the layup that determined the final score with 1.2 seconds left, leaving Benilde insufficient time for a counter attack.

Down 78-79, the Blazers still had a crack at the win, but Jhomel Ancheta coughed up a costly turnover, with Jared Bahay picking up the ball and dishing off the assist to Alas for the win-sealing bucket. 

Travis Roberts also shone for the Blue Eagles with 16 points, while Bahay supplied 8 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds.

Matthew Jucom and John Mowell Morales paced Benilde with 19 and 17 points, respectively. 

The Blue Eagles will face the winner between the Adamson Soaring Falcons and the Mapua Cardinals in the Elite Eight. – Rappler.com

He also featured for India A against Sri Lanka A during a recently concluded tour, picking up six wickets across two four-day matches. Should he make his Test debut in the upcoming series, Auqib would become the first cricketer from Jammu to represent India in the format. Across his first-class career, Auqib has taken 162 wickets in 43 matches at an average of 18.63, including four ten-wicket hauls in a match and 16 five-wicket innings hauls. Bumrah, meanwhile, has been ruled out after failing to recover in time from a left knee injury sustained during the ODI series against England. He had originally been named in India’s squad for the Sri Lanka tour before the setback. His workload has been closely monitored since he suffered a back injury during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, and the recent ODI series against England marked his first appearance in the format since the 2023 World Cup final.     ISLAMABAD: Preparations for the 14th South Asian Games are gaining momentum as senior Olympic officials from across the region gather in Islamabad ahead of a key meeting on the regional sporting event. The Executive Committee of the South Asian Olympic Council (SAOC) is scheduled to meet in the Pakistani capital on Sunday to review arrangements for the Games, which Pakistan is due to host early next year. Delegations from several participating countries have already arrived in Islamabad, while others are expected to reach the capital shortly. A delegation from Nepal, including National Sports Council President Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Vice-President Chaturananda Raj Vaidya and council member Sikka Suwal Shrestha, was among those welcomed by the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA). India’s representative is expected to join the executive committee meeting through video link. The visiting officials are also scheduled to inspect sports facilities in Islamabad as part of their assessment of preparations. Lahore, however, is not included in the venue inspection itinerary. Pakistan intends to hold the Games primarily in Islamabad and Lahore. Lahore will serve as the Games Secretariat and is expected to host most of the competitions, while Faisalabad will also be involved as a host city, with handball scheduled to be played there. The upcoming edition will be Pakistan’s third time hosting the South Asian Games. The country previously staged the regional competition in Islamabad in 1989 and again in 2004. The biennial Games bring together athletes from across South Asia in a wide range of sporting disciplines. Sunday’s meeting is expected to give regional officials an opportunity to assess preparations, examine venues and address remaining issues before the competition begins. With the Games approaching, the Islamabad gathering represents an important step in Pakistan’s efforts to finalise arrangements and deliver a successful regional sporting event.

    Mohammad Abbas breaks Pakistan’s Test bowling record

    TAROUBA: Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Abbas has created a new national record in Test cricket. Abbas has surpassed legendary former captain Imran Khan to achieve Pakistan’s best bowling average among pacers with at least 100 Test wickets. The 36-year-old reached the milestone during Pakistan’s first Test against the West Indies at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba. Abbas dismissed Brandon King and Kavem Hodge during the West Indies’ second innings. He had already taken three wickets in the first innings. The performance took Abbas to 115 Test wickets in 30 matches. His bowling average improved to 22.78. Imran Khan previously held the record with an average of 22.81. He took 362 wickets in 88 Tests during his career. Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis is third on the list. He claimed 373 wickets in 87 Tests at an average of 23.56. Abbas made his Test debut against the West Indies in Kingston in 2017. He received his Test cap from then Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq. Despite his strong domestic record, Abbas spent more than three years away from Pakistan’s Test team. He returned to the side during the tour of South Africa in December 2025. Since his comeback, he has once again become an important part of Pakistan’s pace attack. In 2026, Abbas has taken 15 wickets in three Tests. His performances also include a five-wicket haul. Abbas has also built an impressive record in first-class cricket. He has taken 894 wickets in 220 matches at an average of 20.36. Among active first-class bowlers, Abbas ranks fourth for wickets. James Anderson leads the list with 1,181 wickets, followed by Simon Harmer with 1,054 and Malinda Pushpakumara with 1,010. Abbas’ latest achievement adds another milestone to his career. His accuracy and consistency have helped him become one of Pakistan’s most effective Test bowlers.
