Understanding vW Anhui rolls out 100,000th EV after more than 2 years of production

- The 100,000th vehicle was an ID. UNYX 08, the first model jointly developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng.
- The new ID. UNYX 09 is set to launch later this year.
Volkswagen Anhui said on Tuesday that its 100,000th smart electric vehicle (EV) had rolled off the production line at its Hefei plant, marking another milestone in the German automaker’s electrification push in China.
The milestone vehicle was an ID. UNYX 08, which was handed directly to its owner at a ceremony attended by more than 200 guests.
Volkswagen Anhui was originally named JAC Volkswagen Automotive Co Ltd when it was established in 2017 as a joint venture between Volkswagen Group and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp (JAC). It was Volkswagen’s first joint venture in China dedicated to new energy vehicles (NEVs).
At the end of 2020, Volkswagen increased its stake in the company to 75% and renamed it Volkswagen Anhui, with a focus on NEV research, development and production.
Volkswagen Anhui began mass production in February 2024, with its first model, the Cupra Tavascan, targeting export markets. The joint venture reached the 100,000-vehicle milestone in over 2 years.
It currently has 2 product lines, Cupra and ID. UNYX, with models on sale including the Cupra Tavascan and the ID. UNYX 06, ID. UNYX 07 and ID. UNYX 08. Cupra models are produced exclusively for overseas markets.
All 3 ID. UNYX models were launched in the first half of 2026, while the ID. UNYX 09 is set to go on sale later this year.
The ID. UNYX 08 is the first production model jointly developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV). It was launched on April 16 with a starting price of 229,900 yuan ($33,860).
The vehicle is powered by 2 Turing AI chips supplied by Xpeng, delivering a combined computing power of 1,500 TOPS, and uses Xpeng’s second-generation Vision-Language-Action (VLA 2.0) autonomous driving system.
The ID. UNYX 09 is the second model from the partnership and is positioned by Volkswagen as a B-segment smart all-electric coupe sedan. It was included in a July filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
The 5-seat sedan measures 5,081 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width and 1,509 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm, making it significantly larger than conventional B-segment models in China.
It will be offered in single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions, with peak power outputs of 230 kW and 370 kW, respectively. Both use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries supplied by CATL (HKEX: 3750).
Volkswagen and Xpeng began their strategic partnership in July 2023, when the German automaker announced a $700 million investment in the Chinese EV maker.
To boost sales, Volkswagen has also broken down sales barriers among its joint ventures, allowing some FAW-Volkswagen dealerships to sell Volkswagen Anhui-built models through a shop-in-shop format.
Volkswagen is betting on these new models, which incorporate locally developed technologies, to regain market share in China’s increasingly competitive EV market.
