Alex is joined by none other than Donald Osborne to talk about the interesting POS, sage suggestions for sellers and politicians everywhere, self-editing, ignoring one’s own hard-earned advice, cars as an investment in happiness; driving a Le Monstre replica at Goodwood, and adventures on the old Targa Florio route.
In this latest installment we talk about the problem with Cobras, balancing accuracy with crowd appeal, iconic opening scenes, the dumb downshifts in every racing movie, Tracy Letts, evil composites, 17″ wheels that almost ruin everything, 218 on the Mulsanne, the folder situation at Ford, and the movie’s ranking in the pantheon of racing films.
Alex and Beck discuss a sudden loss of cred, bad highway habits, CyberCab vs XL1, the downside of a design language, trips with children, feeling poor in a Ferrari, Questions of the Week, Inspector Gadget, an F40 amongst the Prii, improving a Delorean, a genius idea for YouTube, bored middle-aged men, and coercing Boy Scouts into car maintenance.
The renowned journalist and founder of The Intercooler, our newest partner in the UK, joins Randy to discuss a concours for cars that get used, “interest in everything,” superhero motoring journalists, driving a Porsche 917K, ghostwriting for (and racing against) Stirling Moss, the era of “peak car,” the dangers of downforce, and more.
We cover vigilante gardening, the new Grand Tour, a hard-working girlfriend, terrifying death traps, the Dymaxion, Allard vs. Healey Silverstone, our favorite Bugeye, ’90s Land Rovers, the M100 Elan, the best car for a 215 V8, the wedge Triumphs, our upcoming appearance at the Bicester Scramble, and our favorite Brit car listings.
Bruce Trenery of Fantasy Junction tells us about the cars of 1960s Berkeley, Lancia Aurelias, appreciation for BaT commenters, driving a vintage Bentley in nuclear Europe, running the Mille Miglia in spectacular cars, buying a Horch from Robin Hood and a Delahaye from a palm reader, honesty in the car business, and a harrowing time at La Carrera.
Randy hosts the chairman of the foundation behind the Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance, whose 70th running culminates June 28. Tune in for ticket discounts and hear about a 250 GTO and a Wienermobile in the same show, the event’s volunteer organization and history, the charities that benefit, BaT evangelism, and rare cars in scary neighborhoods.
Our rowdy group of cig-rippin’ miscreants talk about the joys and pains of this 2000 Nic Cage vehicle and the 1974 cult film on which it was loosely based. Covered: divides of opinion; wanton misuse of the term “masterpiece,” a huge budget divide, cringey car dialogue, fair pay, nighttime, “hot time,” and of course, Eleanor and her stablemates.
We go back nearly two years for an encore of our very first One-Year Garage game. These episodes have been very popular since, and we’ll have a fresh one coming up soon! For now: local Graduate trivia, a two-tone requirement, remembering the names of one’s offspring, dieting to fit in your daily driver, several arguments, and automotive heart health.
Episode 175 covers the reaction to our last movie episode, Tyler’s Corvette origin story, taking calls in parked cars, early lot numbers, lot 250k, the preponderance of cool bikes in Europe, great recent moto sales, a digression into McQueen territory, a Harley revelation, and Alex’s impromptu trip to the UK to spend some time on track at Goodwood.
