Round three of this year’s Michelin and BFGoodrich tire giveaway ended in a tie (another tie!) between the 1970 Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback and the 1983 Ford F-150 XLT. Giving each winner two tires seems like the wrong way to solve it, so we’re awarding both contestants a new set of four!
You won’t see any Ford Mustangs in this week’s list, but today is the 62nd birthday of the original pony car, and we’re not going to let that pass without noting it. What you will see below is a curated collection of the most interesting and unique vehicles featured on BaT in the last seven days. These certainly aren’t the only notable auctions on our site. In fact, there were many, many vehicles that we weren’t able to exclude from our piece without experiencing some serious mental anguish. But you can still find them among the ~1,100 cars currently on our live auctions page.
As we discussed earlier this month, Henry Ford II had declared war on the competition with his “Total Performance” directive in 1962. But over at GM, the word “performance” fueled some queasy feelings amongst the brass. The General’s outright racing ban was imminent, but Chevrolet’s clandestine performance guru Vince Piggins wasn’t going down without a fight. Piggins issued a memo in mid-1962, fast-tracking the development of two race engines for NASCAR and the drag strip: the Mark IS and Mark IIS V8s, both displacing today’s magic number of 427 cubic inches.

The Carefully Curated Collection is the fruit of four decades of collecting for the owner, a sometime concours judge who specialized in paint and bodywork during his professional career. The cars reflect his diverse tastes and include sports cars, GTs, and even prewar classics, all of American, British, and European manufacture. He states that drivability is of paramount importance to enjoying his collection—something we can get behind—and we’re looking forward to seeing videos of these automobiles in action. The collection will be presented in multiple groups by @plasticdr of Nostalgic Motoring Ltd., and the first auctions from Group 1 are now live on the site. Additional lots will be added shortly.

After a month spent discussing raucous big blocks and their exploits on banked ovals and quarter-mile drag strips, we’re ready for something a little more mellow. Something smooth. Today is 4/29, but we’re not going to spill any more ink on oft-celebrated baddies like FoMoCo’s Boss ‘Nine engine or the Super Cobra Jet Lima—today, we’re talking about the Cadillac 429, found under the hood of every car that rolled out of their Clark Street plant between 1964 and 1967.
We’re bringing you this week’s post with an important caveat: it’s very heavy on the weird (that’s good news). Of the 1,100 auctions live on the site this week, the collection below included many that were so irresistibly strange that we had to show them off, even at the expense of things like a FABCAR Porsche 935 and a BOSS 429-powered Pantera. It was hot, it was sunny, there were great cars and boats everywhere–in short, it was South Florida in April! We had a great time meeting everyone who came out to visit us at BaT Local Partner Bullet Motorsports in Fort Lauderdale, where we welcomed hundreds of interesting vehicles and the families and friends who brought them out for the show on Saturday, April 25.
Our friends at Mohr Imports are proud to present the LeVett Collection, a group of 15 cars assembled over six decades that reflect the tastes of the late Dennis “Denny” LeVett, an entrepreneur, investor, hotelier, and dedicated automotive enthusiast perhaps best known on the Monterey Peninsula for partnering with entertainer Doris Day to preserve the Cypress Inn, a hub for artists, actors, and enthusiasts in Carmel-by-the-Sea. LeVett was a fixture at Monterey Car Week and deeply involved in Concours for a Cause. And many of his collection of red, Italian-leaning automobiles were regularly exercised up and down 17-Mile Drive on their way to more casual events over the years.
