“I was 13, accompanying my dad when he drove his ’76 308 GTB Vetroresina to Los Gatos Ferrari for a service appointment. I wandered into the showroom, saw the F355’s… and right smack dab in the middle of the room was this car. Not this exact same one, but an Azure Blue-over-Magnolia Esprit V8. I had never even heard of Lotus before that moment, but I was mesmerized. I sat in the driver’s seat, smelled the leather, saw the red V8 in back… and suddenly forgot that I was surrounded by yellow…”

A few of the comments that stood out to us yesterday:

“Here is some history on the Grand Prix of America race car
This car originates from Grand Prix of America (GPA), an ambitious early 1970s motorsports venture conceived and executed by the DeLorean brothers in Troy, Michigan. Developed in Detroit with race engineering intent, GPA sought to deliver an authentic Grand Prix style driving experience to the public through purpose built single seaters and permanent road courses—establishing a direct lineage to later attractions such as Malibu…”

“In my dad’s early car-guy days he had six MGBs in a row. He would tinker with each then move them along to fund the next project. Then later in (my) early car-guy days we heard of a 1980 Limited Edition barnfind that was available nearby. It was the only iteration of the MGB that my dad had yet to own. Once we brought it home, I learned some things on it like how to bleed the brakes and clutch, make minor metal repairs, detailing tips/tricks, and most importantly how to drive a manual…”

  • Yesterday’s comments of note You Should Know

A few of the comments that stood out to us yesterday:

“Wow! What a coincidence! My current 993 cup-based racecar has THEE original M64/70 993 Cup 3.8L engine that was originally in this BaT car listed (before John Ruther had it converted to an RSR, courtesy of Alwin Springer of ANDIAL and who was also the head of PMNA back then). Basically I have the original low hours still-sealed 3.8L Cup motor and original motorsport ECU/DME that belonged to this car listed when it arrived stateside back in 1995. Small world indeed!”

“When approaching a B24S Spider from the rear, a couple of times when not paying attention I have been fooled and thought early Alfa Romeo 750 Giulietta Spider only to realize I am in the presence of true automotive greatness.
Back in the 1960s when I was a gopher for legendary race driver David Piper on his 250 GTO and then 250 P Ferraris at Goodwood he drove Lancias as his Daily Driver. I asked him why when he raced Ferrari’ finest machinery and he said ‘You need to understand how…”

“Honda corporate donated 50 of these Big Reds to our Sheriff’s department in 1990, and provided advanced training to me and the rest of our deputies who were assigned these vehicles, including taking on thick underbrush at speed, when a four wheel ATV would dry dock. They became marked tactical vehicles for an amazingly-wide variety of extreme duties. What a magnificent machine. GLWTA!!!!!”

  • Question of the Week: What’s the Worst Warning Noise You’ve Ever Heard?—WINNER’S UPDATE You Should Know

    WINNER’S ANNOUNCEMENT:
We’re back to announce the winner for our Question of the Week, where our victor will accept a $25 credit for a hat or T-shirt from the BaT Gear Store and the acclaim of their peers.
This week, we asked: What’s the worst warning noise you’ve ever heard?
Thanks to everyone who participated. Many of your nominations involved a number of cacophonous sounds following a disaster, and these certainly harkened back to last year’s spooky season QotW: scariest noise your car has ever made.
Warning buzzers from the 1970s and 1980s were quite popular in this week’s comment thread. Amid safety regulations, the unruly noises proliferated in American automobiles during the 1970s, and BaT member @CrownRegal told us a funny story about a 1973 Buick LeSabre that tried to warn him when it was already too late:
My first car in high school was a 1973 Buick LeSabre.
