HAFFNER (1.55 Newmarket, nap)

HAFFNER can prove his Curragh flop was too bad to be true. Aidan O’Brien’s colt looked smart before finishing seventh in the National Stakes 13 days ago.

That was miles below the form of his two previous starts. He pushed Dr Rascal to half a length in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood before powering two lengths clear in York’s Acomb. Those efforts set a strong standard and Ryan Moore now returns. His pedigree suggests a mile will suit.

PUSH THE BOAT OUT (3.00 Newmarket, nb)

PUSH THE BOAT OUT made a big impression when winning a 19-runner Curragh maiden on debut last month ahead of today’s rival Marco Polo. He took a major step forward over the same 6f three weeks later, edging out Coventry Stakes winner Great Barrier Reef in Group Three company.

He was carried left halfway, forced to switch over two furlongs out and still finished strongly enough to win. With only two starts behind him, another leap forward looks highly likely.

ETERNAL FORCE (1.35 Haydock, treble)

ETERNAL FORCE can return to winning ways at his favourite track. William Haggas’ four-year-old completed a hat-trick with an easy C&D victory on good to soft here this time last year.

He is a fair 8lb higher and showed he can operate from today’s mark when beaten a nose at Hamilton in June. A longer trip did not help at Newcastle before blinkers failed to spark him at York last time but first-time cheekpieces could wake him up.
