England vs Spain preview
England are back in action, 73 days after their heartbreaking defeat to rivals Argentina in the World Cup semi-final.
The Three Lions did finish with a flourish in a ten-goal thriller against France to secure their best finish at a World Cup since 1966, but it wasn’t enough to diminish the disappointment in North America.
Ten weeks on, and things look largely the same in the England camp, with Thomas Tuchel still in charge and determined to make amends and lead the Three Lions into the 2028 Euros, which they are co-hosting alongside Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
Before that, however, comes the Nations League in a new-look extended international break that will see England play four competitive fixtures, starting with Spain before facing Czechia at home and away, with Croatia sandwiched between.
England are back in the top tier of the competition after suffering relegation to League B in 2022-23, having fought their way back up last time around.
It’s also important to remember that Tuchel’s side have been in good form on home soil, winning 10 of their last 11 competitive matches and keeping clean sheets in each of their last five.
But Spain? Well, they’re a very good side, clearly.
La Roja arrive at Wembley as reigning world and European champions and are unbeaten in their last 38 matches in all competitions, winning 29 and drawing nine.
They’ve also reached three of the last four Nations League finals, while their last five matches in the competition have all seen them score at least twice and concede at least twice.
England actually lead the overall head-to-head record between the two sides, although Spain have won six of the last nine meetings and have kept seven clean sheets in their last eight matches.
