Disney is finally embracing the darker side of its legendary animation history. During the recent D23 event in Anaheim, the company provided a long-awaited update on the Villains Land Magic Kingdom expansion. First teased back in 2024, this massive new area promises to bring a much-needed edge to the park, leaning into the sinister mythology of the studio’s most iconic antagonists.
The concept for the new land centers on a corrupted Wishing Well. According to the announcement, an evil wish has been cast, unleashing dark magic that spreads throughout the surrounding forest and draws in Disney’s most notorious villains. The scale of the project is expected to be significant, with Disney positioning the expansion to be comparable in size to the expansive Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
New Attractions and Dark Magic
The expansion will feature two major attractions designed to immerse guests in this new, darker mythology. The first is a high-speed roller coaster themed around Maleficent. Riders will race around her massive castle before coming face-to-face with the sorceress herself. Disney noted that they are developing new technology specifically for this ride to enhance the experience.
The second attraction is a dark ride centered on the Magic Mirror from Snow White. Guests will travel underground beneath the Evil Queen’s palace to enter the Mirror Realm. Once inside, they will encounter a variety of villains from throughout Disney history. This addition marks a clear shift for the park, as Disney appears to be directly addressing the desires of its adult fanbase who have been asking for more mature and thrilling experiences.

For years, many fans have felt that Disney parks were becoming overly reliant on nostalgia. While the return of Dreamfinder to EPCOT’s Journey Into Imagination was also teased at D23, the Villains Land announcement feels like a more substantial pivot toward modern, immersive storytelling.
