Ewan McGregor Pitched an Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda Story to Dave Filoni: A Practical Look

Ewan McGregor is ready to pick up the lightsaber again, and he is already throwing some fun ideas around for where Obi-Wan Kenobi could go next. The actor, who recently reprised his iconic role in the 2022 Disney+ series, has been vocal about his desire to continue exploring the Jedi Master’s journey. During a recent appearance at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, McGregor revealed that he has even shared some of his concepts with Dave Filoni.

One of the more grounded pitches involves tracking down Yoda after the Jedi Order is scattered across the galaxy. McGregor noted that the idea came up casually while Filoni was working on the series Ahsoka, which features McGregor’s real-life wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The actor explained that because Yoda is somewhere else after the events of Episode III, there is a natural narrative opening for Obi-Wan to attempt to reach out to him while both are in hiding.

This potential storyline offers a compelling foundation for a future project. With Yoda on Dagobah and Obi-Wan eventually settling on Tatooine to watch over Luke Skywalker, there are many years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope that remain largely unexplored on screen. A narrative focused on their connection could delve deeper into how the surviving Jedi processed the destruction of their Order and the rise of the Empire, potentially moving away from the high-stakes lightsaber duels of previous entries.

Beyond the search for Yoda, McGregor also shared a much more lighthearted and admittedly ridiculous pitch. After Mary Elizabeth Winstead was cast as Hera Syndulla in Ahsoka, McGregor began imagining a way their characters could cross paths. He jokingly suggested a love story between Obi-Wan and Hera, despite acknowledging the significant timeline differences between the two characters. While he playfully argued that time does not mean much in the various corners of the Star Wars universe, he admitted that a romance between the two is unlikely given their disparate eras.

Whether Lucasfilm has any concrete plans for another Obi-Wan project remains uncertain. However, McGregor has made it clear that he is completely game for another movie or series if the studio comes calling. He expressed that he enjoyed the experience of the previous series and finds the character to be a rewarding one to play.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series left the character at a pivotal moment, beginning to emerge from the guilt and trauma that consumed him following the fall of Anakin Skywalker. A follow-up project could further bridge the gap toward the version of the character audiences meet in the original trilogy. While the Hera Syndulla romance is clearly a humorous thought, the idea of a search for Yoda provides a strong, character-driven path for a potential return to the franchise.
