Street Fighter Star Callina Liang Reveals Scrapped R-Rated Chun-Li Scene

The latest Street Fighter Movie has brought the iconic fighting game franchise back to the big screen, but it appears the film could have taken a much darker turn. In a recent interview, star Callina Liang revealed that a key scene involving her character, Chun-Li, underwent significant changes during the development process to avoid permanent consequences for the character.

The scene in question depicts Chun-Li pledging her loyalty to the villainous M. Bison. While the final version of the film features a branding sequence where the Shadaloo symbol is burned onto her hand, Liang explained that the original script called for something far more extreme. According to the actress, the production team initially planned for Chun-Li to cut off her own finger as a sign of her allegiance.

Liang noted that she had already camera-tested the sequence without any physical guidance, preparing for the more gruesome version of the event. However, the studio and Capcom ultimately decided to pivot away from the amputation. Liang stated that the parties went back and forth on the script before settling on the hand-branding as a more suitable alternative that would not permanently deform the character for potential future installments in the series.

Box Office Performance and Comparisons

The release of the film has been a subject of industry discussion, particularly regarding its performance compared to other video game adaptations. According to data from The Numbers, the film has grossed approximately 79.6 million dollars worldwide against a production budget of 82 million dollars. The movie opened with 30 million dollars but experienced a significant 72 percent drop during its second weekend in theaters.

Industry analysts have frequently compared the film to Mortal Kombat 2, which targeted a similar demographic of fighting game fans. While the latter film earned 129.5 million dollars during its theatrical run, the current Street Fighter entry holds a 41 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the 63 percent critic score achieved by its competitor. Despite the steep second-weekend drop, some projections suggest the film could still cross the 100 million dollar mark globally before its theatrical run concludes.

A Star-Studded Ensemble

Beyond the performance of the lead actors, the film boasts a massive ensemble cast that has drawn significant attention. The production features performances from Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, and Joe Anoa’i, better known to wrestling fans as Roman Reigns. The supporting cast is rounded out by David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, Eric André, Andrew Schulz, Vidyut Jammwal, Orville Peck, Curtis 50 Cent Jackson, and Jason Momoa.

The decision to soften the intensity of Chun-Li’s initiation scene highlights the delicate balance studios must strike when adapting mature source material for a broader theatrical audience. While the branding scene remains a intense moment in the film, the choice to avoid a permanent physical alteration suggests a focus on maintaining the character’s viability for future franchise growth.
