Supreme Court Declines Donald Trump’s Request For Rehearing Of E. Jean Carroll Defamation Case

Donald Trump appears to have reached the end of the line when it comes to challenging a $5 million jury verdict in favor of writer E. Jean Carroll.

Carroll claimed that Trump sexually abused her at a Manhattan department store in 1996, and later defamed her. Trump has denied the allegations.

The Supreme Court on Monday denied the president’s petition for rehearing, after the justices earlier rejected a petition to take up the case. That left in place a lower court decision, upholding a jury’s verdict that found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. With interest, the damages sum added up to $5.63 million.

Trump is also appealing a verdict in a separate proceeding, in which a jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million after finding him liable for defamation.

Last month, the $5.63 million damages amount was transmitted to Carroll’s law firm, after a judge ordered it released from an escrow account in place as Trump pursued appeals.
