God of War TV Series Could Be Delayed An Entire Year After Set Injury Involving Star Ryan Hurst
The upcoming God of War series may be in for an unfortunate delay after a reported injury on set. Prime Video’s God of War show, based on the video game of the same name, is currently in production. The series does not yet have an official release date, although there was considerable speculation that it would be out sometime in 2027. Unfortunately, with a recent major setback on set, that release date might be coming much later than fans (and production) were hoping.
Ryan Hurst, who is set to star in the series as Kratos, has reportedly had an injury on set that may set production back significantly in schedule. Per TMZ, the star suffered a tear to his bicep while performing a stunt (the specific stunt remains unknown). Although details about the injury are sparse, it will reportedly require surgery, which means a pause in production—the length of which is currently not clear. At present, TMZ indicates, production was aiming for a mid-August return, but the injury will require a longer recovery period, potentially pushing production back until 2027.
God of War Was Off to a Promising (If a Bit Rocky) Start

Prior to this setback, the ramifications of which may not be known for quite some time, Prime’s God of War was off to a fairly good start. There had been praise for a range of casting choices, not only with Hurst as Kratos, but also with the confirmation that Ed Skrein was going to play the villain Baldur in the upcoming series. Casting an adaptation is a major part of the battle, as video game adaptations in particular have, at times, learned the hard way. Audiences can be incredibly picky about who they want portraying a character, so these positive responses were important.
Sadly, though, not everything for the show has been smooth sailing, even before this latest news. One of the most significant hiccups thus far was the extensive backlash to the first look photo, as many argued that it looked like AI. The criticisms were so sweeping, in fact, that God of War video game creator David Jaffe called out the image as well, saying that it looked “terrible.” Clearly, these were some troubling updates for the work-in-progress, but they had also happened several months ago. Since then, it’s been fairly quiet.
That is, in part, what makes this setback even more discouraging. Although no news doesn’t actually always mean good news, things had quieted down with the upcoming series, suggesting that work—perhaps even work addressing fan complaints thus far—was being done. Now, the show is presumably going to be delayed, which will likely only add to fan frustrations. Hopefully, both for the show and, of course, for his own sake, Hurst heals from his injury quickly and God of War is able to get back on track.
