Chris Gavina leaves UE, Paolo Hubalde takes over head coaching post

MANILA, Philippines – UE will once again open a new chapter in its men’s basketball program.

Chris Gavina is no longer the coach of the Red Warriors as interim head coach Paolo Hubalde takes over the reins during their match against the FEU Tamaraws on Saturday, September 26.

Hubalde, a former PBA player and UE legend who returned to the Red Warriors’ program as an assistant coach in Season 89, is expected to be the team’s head coach for the rest of the season.

The coaching change comes as UE battles through a 22-game losing streak dating back to Season 87 in October 2024.

Gavina was not on the bench for UE’s game on Saturday. Assistant coaches Alex Cabagnot and Nick Demusis were also absent.

The Red Warriors opened the current season with losses to the Ateneo Blue Eagles by 27 points, and the NU Bulldogs by 20 points, extending a difficult stretch for the program.

Gavina leaves UE without a win in 16 games after taking over from Jack Santiago in 2025.

Santiago led the Red Warriors to six victories before UE fell in a playoff for the No. 4 seed in Season 87, missing a chance to make its first Final Four appearance in 15 years.

Hubalde now inherits a young roster featuring Nur Datumalim, Cole Cruz-Dumont, Tope Lagat and foreign reinforcements JM Edoukou and Ola Ajani.

The former UE point guard played for the Red Warriors in the mid-2000s, when the program featured stars such as Paul Artadi, James Yap, Niño Canaleta and Ronald Tubid.

Hubalde returns to a very different UE team, one still searching for stability and its first win of the season.

Hubalde will also balance his new role with his duties as UE’s junior high school basketball coach.

He will have help from active consultant Allan Caidic, another name linked to the head coaching vacancy, along with assistant coach RJ Argamino.

For UE, the change marks another attempt to turn the page and begin rebuilding the Red Warriors into a competitive program. – Rappler.com

Emi Martinez hints at Argentina retirement after World Cup final

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano “Emi” Martinez has hinted that his international career could be nearing its end following Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. The 33-year-old shot-stopper shared an emotional message on social media after the loss, suggesting it may be time to consider stepping away from international football after years of success with La Albiceleste. “I dreamed we’d win it again. I dreamed of bringing the trophy back to Argentina and making history once more,” Martinez wrote on Instagram. The Aston Villa goalkeeper admitted the defeat was one of the most painful moments of his career, saying he had given everything to help Argentina defend the world title they won in Qatar in 2022. “The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it’s time to step aside,” he said, adding, “I’m so sorry. I truly tried my best to help my country and my teammates.” Martinez featured in all eight matches of Argentina’s World Cup campaign, keeping two clean sheets while conceding eight goals. Despite the final defeat, he was widely regarded as one of Argentina’s standout performers throughout the tournament. In the final against Spain, Martinez produced a series of crucial saves to keep his side in contention as Spain dominated large periods of the match. However, his resistance was finally broken in extra time when Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, sealing Spain’s victory. Martinez has earned 67 international caps since making his Argentina debut and has played a central role in one of the country’s most successful eras. Alongside the 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, he helped Argentina win multiple major international titles and claimed the Golden Glove award as the best goalkeeper at the Qatar World Cup. The experienced goalkeeper has also been recognised at club level, winning the prestigious Yashin Trophy in both 2023 and 2024 as the world’s best goalkeeper. Although Martinez remains under contract with Aston Villa until 2029, he has recently been linked with a potential move to Italian giants Juventus. His emotional message has sparked speculation over whether the World Cup final marked the end of an unforgettable chapter with Argentina, though no official retirement decision has yet been announced.

Pakistan’s Saqib and Jawad punch their way into GAMMA MMA finals

Pakistan has two fighters through to the finals of the GAMMA Asian MMA Championship 2026. Muhammad Saqib and Muhammad Jawad both delivered strong performances on Wednesday to book their places in the title matches of their respective weight categories. The event, formally known as the 2nd GAMMA Asian MMA Championships, is currently underway in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It runs from July 28 through August 2, 2026. The tournament is organized by the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts and brings together elite fighters from across the continent, spanning both youth and senior divisions, all competing for gold. Getting to the finals was not easy. Both Pakistani athletes had to get past tough opponents from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in earlier rounds. They did so by showing sharp technical skill, real determination, and a fighting spirit that stood out throughout the competition. Saqib will step into the Under-18 category final, where he will face a fighter from Kazakhstan. Jawad, meanwhile, has his own final lined up in the Under-16 category, also against a Kazakh opponent. This is not a new territory for Saqib, either. He already has an impressive résumé, having won gold at the GAMMA World MMA Championship back in 2024, along with several other international successes representing Pakistan. Their progress has not gone unnoticed back home. Zulfiqar Ali, who heads the Pakistan Mixed Martial Arts Federation, spoke highly of both fighters following their wins. He said the federation feels genuine pride in watching these young athletes compete, and he extended that praise to their coaches and the broader national team as well. According to Ali, both Saqib and Jawad have represented Pakistan with serious dedication. He pointed to their training and mental toughness as key reasons for their success so far in the tournament. He didn’t stop there, either. Ali went on to wish both fighters well ahead of their upcoming final bouts, saying the whole country would be cheering them on. He added that he expects both athletes to carry the same energy and focus into their finals that got them this far. Ali said he is confident they will continue performing at a high level, and that a strong showing could mean even more glory for Pakistan on the international stage.
