Emi Martinez hints at Argentina retirement after World Cup final

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano “Emi” Martinez has hinted that his international career could be nearing its end following Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.

The 33-year-old shot-stopper shared an emotional message on social media after the loss, suggesting it may be time to consider stepping away from international football after years of success with La Albiceleste.

“I dreamed we’d win it again. I dreamed of bringing the trophy back to Argentina and making history once more,” Martinez wrote on Instagram.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper admitted the defeat was one of the most painful moments of his career, saying he had given everything to help Argentina defend the world title they won in Qatar in 2022.

“The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it’s time to step aside,” he said, adding, “I’m so sorry. I truly tried my best to help my country and my teammates.”

Martinez featured in all eight matches of Argentina’s World Cup campaign, keeping two clean sheets while conceding eight goals. Despite the final defeat, he was widely regarded as one of Argentina’s standout performers throughout the tournament.

In the final against Spain, Martinez produced a series of crucial saves to keep his side in contention as Spain dominated large periods of the match. However, his resistance was finally broken in extra time when Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, sealing Spain’s victory.

Martinez has earned 67 international caps since making his Argentina debut and has played a central role in one of the country’s most successful eras. Alongside the 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, he helped Argentina win multiple major international titles and claimed the Golden Glove award as the best goalkeeper at the Qatar World Cup.

The experienced goalkeeper has also been recognised at club level, winning the prestigious Yashin Trophy in both 2023 and 2024 as the world’s best goalkeeper.

Although Martinez remains under contract with Aston Villa until 2029, he has recently been linked with a potential move to Italian giants Juventus.

His emotional message has sparked speculation over whether the World Cup final marked the end of an unforgettable chapter with Argentina, though no official retirement decision has yet been announced.

US, Saudi Arabia sign major civil nuclear cooperation agreement

The United States and Saudi Arabia have signed a major civil nuclear cooperation agreement, opening a new chapter in their strategic partnership and expanding cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The agreement was signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. Along with the civil nuclear cooperation pact, both countries also signed a bilateral safeguards agreement to ensure that nuclear technology is used only for peaceful and civilian purposes. The agreement establishes the legal framework for long-term cooperation in the civil nuclear sector. It is expected to support multi-billion-dollar investments, strengthen commercial ties, and create opportunities for collaboration on future nuclear energy projects. US officials said the partnership will allow American companies to participate in Saudi Arabia’s growing civil nuclear programme. The agreement is also expected to increase exports of US nuclear technology, equipment, and services while creating new employment opportunities and strengthening industrial supply chains in the United States. The two governments said the agreement reflects their shared commitment to expanding economic cooperation while maintaining the highest international standards for nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation. Officials stressed that the partnership is designed to ensure that nuclear technology is used exclusively for peaceful purposes and remains under strict international safeguards. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright described the agreement as an important step toward strengthening relations between Washington and Riyadh. He said the partnership would promote economic growth, improve energy cooperation, and enhance security for both countries and their regional allies. He added that the agreement relies on advanced American nuclear technology and scientific expertise while fully complying with international nuclear safety and non-proliferation requirements. Officials also believe the agreement will strengthen the United States’ position in the global civil nuclear industry by expanding overseas markets for American technology and reinforcing its leadership in peaceful nuclear development. For Saudi Arabia, the agreement supports the country’s long-term energy strategy, which aims to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on oil by developing a civilian nuclear power programme alongside renewable energy projects. The agreement will now be submitted to the US Congress for review before it can enter into force. Following congressional approval, both countries are expected to begin implementing the framework and advance cooperation on future civil nuclear projects.

Israel erupts over reported US-Saudi nuclear deal …

Israel’s opposition leaders have sharply criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for remaining silent over reports of a proposed civil nuclear agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia. The reported deal has sparked concerns among Israeli politicians, who argue it could have significant security implications for the Middle East. According to Israeli media, former Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman described the proposed agreement as a strategic threat to Israel. He argued that civil nuclear programs can eventually pave the way for military nuclear capabilities, pointing to Iran as an example. Lieberman warned that allowing Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium on its own territory would cross a major security red line and could encourage a regional nuclear arms race. Lieberman also expressed concern that nuclear facilities in Saudi Arabia could become potential targets in any future conflict involving Iran. He urged the Israeli government to actively oppose the agreement and lobby members of the US Congress to reject it, even if doing so creates disagreements with US President Donald Trump. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak also questioned the reported agreement, noting that it reportedly does not require Saudi Arabia to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel. According to Barak, the absence of such a condition could indicate reduced trust between Netanyahu and the US administration. Meanwhile, Democratic Party leader Yair Golan blamed Netanyahu’s policies for creating conditions that made such an agreement possible. He argued that if Saudi Arabia secures a favorable nuclear cooperation deal, other countries in the Middle East may seek similar agreements with Washington, potentially reshaping the region’s strategic balance. Reports in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz suggest that Israeli officials are particularly concerned about the possibility of Saudi Arabia being allowed to enrich uranium domestically. One Israeli source reportedly said such a provision would not be viewed positively in Israel, even if it were accompanied by future normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel. The debate follows reports published by The Wall Street Journal, which claimed that President Donald Trump has approved a framework for a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia. According to the report, the proposed agreement could run for 30 years and involve investments worth several billion dollars. It would reportedly provide Saudi Arabia with access to civilian nuclear technology for energy production, while discussions continue over whether uranium enrichment would be permitted under the deal. Although negotiations over US-Saudi nuclear cooperation have continued for years, the reported agreement remains closely watched because of its potential impact on regional security, energy cooperation, and future diplomatic relations in the Middle East.
