Japanese influencer dies by suicide amid online trolling

A Japanese influencer living in South Korea reportedly died by suicide during a TikTok livestream, following intense online trolling and criticism.

According to international media reports, Mina-chan was found dead at her residence in Seoul on August 5 after viewers alerted police during a livestream. Yongsan Police responded to the report and found her body at the scene.

Mina-chan was a popular TikTok creator and a fan of K-pop group ENHYPEN. She had around 80,000 followers on the platform.

Her younger sister later confirmed her death through a post on Instagram.

Reports said Mina-chan had faced criticism on social media after an incident at an ENHYPEN concert in the United States last month.

During the event, she reportedly asked the group’s member Sunoo to pass flowers she had brought to another Japanese member, Ni-ki.

Following the incident, some fans accused her of crossing boundaries with the group members. She subsequently became the target of criticism and online trolling.

On July 31, Mina-chan posted a lengthy apology on X. She said she believed she had taken advantage of Sunoo’s kindness and expressed regret over her actions.

She also said that after attending several fan-sign events, she had mistakenly developed the impression that she was particularly close to the members of the group.

Despite issuing an apology, reports said the online criticism and abusive comments against her continued.

    Mohsen Rezaei takes Iran’s top security post

    Iran has appointed veteran Revolutionary Guards commander Mohsen Rezaei as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), placing a prominent security figure in a senior position at a sensitive time for the country. Rezaei, 71, replaces Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr as secretary of the council. Zolqadr has instead been appointed as a political adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. The SNSC plays a central role in coordinating Iran’s national security and foreign policy. It is formally chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian and includes senior military, intelligence and government officials. Rezaei brings decades of military and political experience to the position. He joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and became its commander in 1981, when he was only 27. He remained at the helm of the IRGC for 16 years. Much of his tenure coincided with the Iran-Iraq war from 1980 to 1988. During that period, he oversaw the development of the organisation’s land, naval and air capabilities. After leaving the IRGC command, Rezaei remained an influential figure within Iran’s political and security establishment. He later served for more than two decades as secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council. He also entered electoral politics and repeatedly sought the presidency of Iran. From 2021 to 2023, he served as vice president for economic affairs under former President Ebrahim Raisi. Rezaei holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Tehran, although much of his career has been focused on military, security and political affairs. His relationship with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is another significant factor behind his new appointment. Rezaei was named a military adviser to Khamenei after the latter assumed the supreme leadership earlier this year. Khamenei also issued a decree appointing Rezaei as his representative on the SNSC. The decree highlighted Rezaei’s extensive military experience, particularly his role during the Iran-Iraq war. During the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, Rezaei has frequently made public statements on security and foreign policy issues. He has expressed strong opposition to concessions in negotiations with Washington and has repeatedly taken a hard-line position on Iran’s security interests. His appointment therefore places an experienced IRGC commander at the centre of Iran’s national security decision-making structure. Rezaei’s political journey began even before the Islamic Revolution. As a teenager, he became involved in opposition activities against Iran’s Pahlavi monarchy.     Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: A terrorist attack on a joint police checkpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district has resulted in the martyrdom of 15 people, including 14 security personnel, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The military’s media wing said the attack took place early Friday and was carried out by militants identified as Fitna-al-Khawarij, a term used by authorities for members of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). ISPR said the attackers attempted to breach the checkpost’s perimeter, but their efforts were swiftly stopped by security forces. The personnel deployed at the post responded with courage and professionalism, engaging the attackers and killing 15 militants. According to the statement, after the failed attempt to enter the checkpost, the attackers rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the perimeter wall. The powerful blast caused severe damage to the infrastructure and resulted in the martyrdom of 15 individuals, including 12 soldiers, two police officers, and a government official from the former forest department. A sanitisation operation is currently underway in the area to locate and eliminate any remaining terrorists. ISPR said security forces and law enforcement agencies will continue counterterrorism operations under the Azm-e-Istehkam strategy to eliminate terrorism from the country. The military’s media wing paid tribute to the sacrifices of security personnel, stating that their sacrifices strengthen Pakistan’s resolve to protect the nation. The attack comes amid increased militant activity in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Security forces have recently conducted operations in Bannu and surrounding areas, where several militants were killed during intelligence-based operations.     SBP reserves climb to $17.26bn

    Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) posted a slight increase during the week ending July 17. However, the country’s overall liquid reserves recorded a small decline as commercial banks’ holdings decreased. According to the latest figures released by the central bank, SBP’s foreign exchange reserves increased by $33 million, taking the total to $17.26 billion. The increase reflects a gradual improvement in the country’s external financial position. Despite the rise in the central bank’s reserves, Pakistan’s total liquid foreign exchange reserves slipped by $5.9 million to $22.67 billion. The decline was caused by a fall in the reserves held by commercial banks. Commercial banks’ net foreign exchange reserves dropped by $38.7 million, bringing their total holdings to $5.41 billion. As a result, Pakistan’s total foreign reserves now provide import cover for nearly 2.5 months, highlighting the need for further improvement in external inflows. The Pakistani rupee remained stable in the interbank market. It closed at Rs277.90 against the US dollar, compared with Rs277.91 a day earlier. The slight gain came as the US dollar also remained mostly steady in global markets despite continued geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, gold prices in Pakistan declined sharply after international bullion prices fell by more than two percent. The price of 24-karat gold per tola dropped by Rs1,800 to Rs432,036. The price of 10 grams of gold fell by Rs1,543 to Rs370,401. Silver prices also moved lower, with the per tola rate declining by Rs33 to Rs6,370. The decline followed a strong rally in the previous trading session when gold prices had increased significantly in the domestic market. Internationally, gold prices fell after investors shifted their focus to rising oil prices and expectations that the US Federal Reserve may continue raising interest rates to control inflation. Spot gold traded near $4,047 per ounce, while US gold futures also recorded noticeable losses. Global energy markets remained under pressure as Brent crude oil climbed to around $100 per barrel. Rising tensions in the Middle East and concerns over disruptions to oil supplies supported higher crude prices. Analysts believe that increasing oil prices could push inflation higher around the world. This may encourage central banks, particularly the US Federal Reserve, to maintain a tighter monetary policy. Higher interest rates generally reduce the appeal of gold because the precious metal does not provide any interest or fixed return to investors. As borrowing costs increase, investors often shift towards interest-bearing assets.
