Foreign man found dead in sea at Hua Don beach identified as British pensioner
A foreign man found dead in the sea at Hua Don beach in Hua Hin has been identified by international media as a 75-year-old British pensioner.
Emergency services were called at around 4:30pm on 15 April after Hua Hin Police received a report of a person floating in the water near the ferry pier in Nong Kae.
Rescue personnel from the Sawang Hua Hin Thammasathan Rescue Centre, along with Ambulance Unit 02 and a police water search and rescue team, attended the scene. On arrival, they discovered the body of a foreign male, which was later brought back to shore with assistance from a local jet ski team.
According to a witness, a fisherman who had been sitting near the pier saw the man floating face down in the sea and alerted police.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene before being transported to Hua Hin Hospital for further examination. Authorities have not officially released his identity.
However, UK media reports have identified the deceased as a 75-year-old man from Liverpool. Reports indicate he may have been swept out to sea by a strong rip current while swimming.
The Sun quoted Police Captain Prasong Jaturat as saying the man had been swimming alone at the same location each morning, where conditions are usually calm.
He added that sea conditions on the day of the incident were significantly rougher, with strong waves and no other swimmers in the water.
The man is believed to have entered the sea near the mouth of the bay, which was used as the channel for the ferry crossing to Chonburi. The area is known to be deeper than surrounding waters due to dredging for larger boats.
Police believe he may have been caught in a rip current and pulled under by the waves.
