Grassroots boost as Hidilyn Diaz’s weightlifting gym in Zamboanga gets new equipment

MANILA, Philippines – Hidilyn Diaz’s weightlifting gym in her hometown of Mampang in Zamboanga City has already produced multiple international champions.

This August, Alexsandra Ann Diaz and Jhodie Peralta — who both honed their skills at the gym — raked in gold medals in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where the Philippines emerged as one of the best performing nations.

Diaz, 15, completed a golden sweep in the youth division of the women’s 49kg category and also held her own at the junior level, bagging a pair of bronzes in snatch and total lift.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Peralta bagged five medals in the women’s 59kg class, striking a pair of golds in snatch and total lift and a silver in clean and jerk at the youth level before bagging gold in snatch and silver in total lift in the junior division.

And the prospects of the gym developing more champions in the future are promising as it received new equipment from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

The PSC on Wednesday, August 19, turned over new sets of weights, steel bars, dumbbells, and medicine balls to the gym, where over 20 grassroots athletes train.

Diaz, the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medalist, said she is glad that the gym that she built in 2017 — a year after she won silver in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games — continues to thrive.

“I’m happy to see that a lot of our youth are trying weightlifting and are dreaming to become medalists,” Diaz wrote on Facebook in Filipino.

Diaz also oversees the HD Weightlifting Academy in Jala-jala, Rizal, together with husband-coach Julius Naranjo.

A staunch advocate of weightlifting, Diaz was instrumental in it becoming a regular sport in the Palarong Pambansa.

Diaz, 35, also teaches weightlifting as a physical education subject at the University of the Philippines Diliman. – Rappler.com

Iga Swiatek storms into Toronto semifinal against Svitolina

TORONTO: Former world number one Iga Swiatek produced a commanding performance to defeat Diana Shnaider 6-2, 6-1 and reach the Toronto Masters semi-finals, where she will face Elina Svitolina in a highly anticipated showdown. The six-time Grand Slam champion needed only 64 minutes to dispatch the Russian and move into the last four of the Canadian Open. Swiatek controlled the contest from the opening exchanges, using her powerful groundstrokes and precise movement to keep Shnaider under constant pressure. The Polish seventh seed never faced a break point and dominated the match with impressive consistency. She quickly established a 5-2 advantage in the opening set before breaking Shnaider again and serving it out in 31 minutes. The second set proved even more one-sided. Swiatek broke early to move ahead 2-1 before another strong sequence of winners helped her extend the advantage. A third break finally ended Shnaider’s resistance and completed a convincing victory. “From the beginning, I went for it. I felt like I could dominate,” Swiatek said after the match. She also praised her ability to adapt to difficult windy conditions, saying she focused on staying solid rather than overplaying. The victory is significant for Swiatek, who has endured a challenging 2026 season. It marks her first WTA 1000 semi-final of the year, giving her an opportunity to build momentum ahead of the US Open. Standing between Swiatek and a place in the final is Elina Svitolina, who produced a dramatic comeback against Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Ukrainian ninth seed lost the opening set 6-3 but responded brilliantly, winning the second 6-0 before completing a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory. Svitolina recovered after an early setback and showed her fighting spirit when Alexandrova briefly threatened to extend the match late in the deciding set. The upcoming semi-final promises another intriguing chapter in their rivalry. Swiatek has won three of their five meetings, but Svitolina won their two encounters earlier in 2026, including a three-set victory in the Rome semi-final. With both players arriving in Toronto with plenty to prove, their semi-final is shaping up as one of the tournament’s most compelling battles.

Pakistan squad arrives in England for Test series

Pakistan’s Test squad has arrived in England for a three-match series, with the team set to begin preparations ahead of the opening Test on August 19. The national side reached England after drawing their recent Test series in the West Indies 1-1. The upcoming tour will present another demanding challenge, particularly with England’s conditions expected to test Pakistan’s batters and bowlers. The Pakistan squad will take a short break on August 8 and 9 before returning to training. The team is scheduled to begin its first practice session on August 10 at the County Ground in Beckenham. Training is scheduled to start at 9:30am local time as the players begin adapting to the English conditions. Before the Test series gets underway, Pakistan will have an important opportunity to fine-tune their combinations during a four-day practice match against a Select XI. The warm-up fixture is scheduled to take place from August 12 to 15. The practice game is expected to help the team management assess players ahead of the first Test while allowing the squad to adjust to the pace, movement and weather conditions in England. Pakistan and England will then begin their three-Test series on August 19. The visitors will be hoping to carry lessons from their West Indies campaign into the tour and make a strong start in England. For Pakistan, the series will also provide an important test of their red-ball depth, with both experienced players and younger members of the squad expected to play key roles. With training, a four-day practice match and the opening Test all lined up, Pakistan’s preparations are now officially underway. The team will be eager to use the coming days wisely before the real contest begins on August 19, when Pakistan and England resume their battle in the longest format of the game.
