Robert Downey Jr.’s WandaVision Comments Make The Biggest Doomsday Rumor We All Want Feel Even More Likely
Unsurprisingly, considering how monumental Avengers: Doomsday is going to be for the MCU, rumors have continued to swirl about what this movie is going to entail. Among the biggest questions, of course, are the connection between Doctor Doom and Tony Stark, given that Robert Downey Jr. is playing/has played both. It seems equally likely that Tony Stark is a Doom variant or Doom is a Tony Stark variant, but there is always the possibility that neither is true and the MCU is going to pull off something completely unexpected. Similarly, Avengers: Endgame had heavily implied that Steve Rogers’ MCU days were over, and his absence in the time since had seemed to reinforce it. Yet, as with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans is back once again as Steve, raising similar questions about this return.
As interesting as these questions about RDJ and Evans returning are, though, these are far from the only Doomsday possibilities leading to plenty of rumors, online speculation, and theories. In fact, perhaps the biggest rumor of all—and one that many fans desperately want to be true—is that Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch will be making her return in Doomsday, following her apparent death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Although it’s not confirmed that Olsen is ever returning at all, her demise in that movie proved to be extremely controversial, and many within the fanbase believe that it can’t be her true end. Given that Wanda and Doom have a shared arc in the comics, there is also plenty of reason to believe this is possible. Now, with Robert Downey Jr. weighing in on WandaVision, it is feeling more possible than ever that this rumor could be true.
WandaVision Helped Robert Downey Jr. Stay “Connected” to the MCU—But There’s a Catch
In a recent interview with CBR, Downey Jr. praised WandaVision and shared that the show helped him feel “connected” to the MCU following Endgame. Importantly, he seemed to be specifically talking about maintaining an emotional connection to the franchise after his (apparent) departure, as WandaVision came out just a few years later and was such high quality. He specifically said, “And by the way, WandaVision kept me connected to the MCU during the pandemic. It would’ve been great at any point in time, but everyone across the board has done their part.”
Without that specific context, audiences are running with the idea that RDJ was talking about keeping his character connected to the MCU, suggesting that WandaVision has a direct connection to his MCU future and/or Doomsday. That interpretation of Downey Jr.’s words feels overstated, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that his commentary has no bearing on the possible role of WandaVision in Doomsday and, by extension, the potential return of Wanda.
Rather, assuming that Robert Downey Jr. doesn’t sit down to watch every single MCU show and movie, which seems like a safe assumption, it’s notable that WandaVision in particular is being called out by the MCU star. What’s more, as much as he may have been referring to his own experience of watching the show and remaining invested in the MCU, the impact of the show and its inherent connection to Avengers: Infinity War—which was the topic of conversation for this interview—still makes it feel more likely than not that neither the show nor Wanda herself is truly being left in the past. Of course, for now, that remains to be seen, but the very suggestion of these comments from Downey Jr. has fans convinced that we are seeing Wanda soon.
