SGA denied Jones Cup 3-peat due to unusual format; Chinese Taipei federation apologizes

MANILA, Philippines – The Chinese Taipei Basketball Association (CTBA) admitted shortcomings in its staging of the 2026 William Jones Cup, acknowledging Strong Group Athletics as the “biggest victim” of a strange format that has left the Filipino representatives unable to get a crack at a rare three-peat.

The defending two-time champion, SGA, failed to advance out of Group B as it lost its semifinal spot to one of the two home teams, Chinese Taipei Blue, which automatically reached the final four regardless of the results.

Under normal tournament circumstances, SGA should have joined Korean Basketball League club Wonju DB Promy in the knockout rounds as they topped Group B with identical 5-1 records. 

However, SGA missed the cut, with Chinese Taipei Blue advancing despite an inferior 1-5 slate.

“We apologize for the heated discussions caused by the changes to the competition format. In the future, we will continue to improve the Jones Cup scheduling arrangements to meet fans’ expectations and allow the visiting overseas teams to enjoy the competition,” the CTBA said.

“The Philippines’ SGA team, a two-time champion that was placed in the same group as Chinese Taipei Blue, may have been the biggest victim of this year’s new format. Despite having a better record, SGA was unable to advance because of the tournament rules.”

SGA missed out on the final four owing to its 110-79 loss to Wonju in its tournament opener on August 14.

Although SGA racked up four straight victories, beating Japan twice (78-72 on August 15 and 107-86 on August 18), dealing Chinese Taipei Blue a 97-78 beating on August 16, and exacting a 113-87 revenge on Wonju on August 19, it fell short of the 32-point margin it needed against the Korean team to win the tiebreaker.

Wonju held the tiebreaker advantage by 5 points.

After Wonju secured its semifinal seat with a 75-64 win over Japan on Thursday, August 20, SGA could only vent its ire on Chinese Taipei Blue in its final group stage game, handing the home squad a 117-74 drubbing.

“We wanted to really blow out Taipei to show that we were the ones who deserved to be playing for the championship. We’ve really hit our stride and are playing at a high level right now. It’s just so, so unfortunate that this is the way things are set up,” said SGA head coach Charles Tiu.

Puerto Rican import Isaiah Pineiro posted 22 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Remy Martin and Matthew Wright fired 19 and 18 points, respectively, as SGA coasted to the most lopsided victory of this Jones Cup, but still not enough to send it to the final four. 

“The association acknowledges that the tournament format and scheduling could have been better designed to ensure that all teams had the opportunity to compete against one another and exchange skills on the court,” said the CTBA. 

Denied a shot at becoming the first time to win three consecutive Jones Cup titles since Iran ruled from 2009 to 2011, SGA looks to end its campaign in style as it battles Jordan in the fifth-place game on Friday, August 21. 

Joining Wonju and Chinese Taipei Blue in the semifinals are American college team UC Irvine Anteaters and Chinese Taipei White. – Rappler.com

Fitness levels, recovery, and overall match readiness are all expected to improve as a result. This move comes at a time when Pakistan cricket has faced repeated calls for better domestic infrastructure. Many current players have had to look abroad for facilities like rehabilitation centers and proper swimming pools. A setup like this could help change that. Combining the NCA and LCCA grounds into one upgraded space is also expected to simplify things for coaches and support staff. Managing schedules, monitoring fitness, and coordinating training sessions should become easier with everything centralized in one location. So far, no official timeline has been announced for when the project will be completed. Still, the early progress, especially the wall coming down, suggests that the plan is already moving forward without unnecessary delays. If everything goes as planned, this could turn out to be one of the more meaningful infrastructure upgrades for Pakistan cricket in recent memory. Giving players access to modern training resources at home, instead of depending on facilities overseas, could go a long way in supporting long-term player development. For now, all eyes remain on how quickly the project moves from demolition to full completion.

    UEFA welcomes FIFA investment plan withdrawal

    UEFA has welcomed FIFA’s decision to abandon its controversial private investment proposal, calling the move “a victory for the whole game” while declaring that it has lost confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s leadership. The governing body for European football made the remarks after FIFA officially scrapped plans to sell stakes in its competitions following widespread opposition from football associations around the world. On August 1, FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed that the proposal to bring private investors into FIFA tournaments had been withdrawn after facing intense backlash and threats of a boycott. The plan had sparked strong criticism from UEFA, which argued that football’s global competitions should not be treated as commercial assets. Before the proposal was abandoned, UEFA had firmly opposed the idea, stating: “Football is not FIFA’s to sell.” Following FIFA’s decision to withdraw the proposal, UEFA issued another strongly worded statement welcoming the outcome while criticising Infantino’s leadership. The statement read: “The current FIFA leadership has not only lost UEFA’s confidence but also that of many other members of the football family.” UEFA also reminded members of the promises Infantino made when he first sought election as FIFA president in 2016. Quoting his campaign pledge, the organisation said: “When Gianni Infantino asked for the trust and the votes of FIFA’s member associations to elect him as their president in 2016, he said: ‘Of course we have to be transparent.’” The European governing body accused Infantino of failing to live up to that commitment, claiming he had handled FIFA’s finances without sufficient transparency and had treated the organisation’s money as though it belonged to him personally. The controversy began on July 29, when Infantino reportedly offered each of FIFA’s 211 member associations$40 million in exchange for supporting a proposal that would allow private investment in FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups. UEFA responded swiftly by announcing it would boycott future World Cups if the proposal moved forward. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) also declared that it “stands in solidarity” with UEFA and Concacaf, adding further pressure on FIFA to reconsider the plan. The criticism did not stop there. FIFA chief operating officer Kevin Lamour reportedly admitted that the organisation’s own administration had been “deceived” about the investment project. Meanwhile, FIFA senior adviser on global strategy and governance Carlos Cordeiro resigned over the proposal, describing it as: “A bad deal for football” He also warned that it would: “Mortgage football’s future.” The episode has created fresh uncertainty around Infantino’s leadership ahead of FIFA’s next presidential election. Infantino, who was first elected FIFA president in 2016 after defeating AFC president Sheikh Salman al-Khalifa by 115 votes to 88, is expected to seek another term. FIFA’s next president will be confirmed at the organisation’s 77th Congress in Morocco next March, with candidates required to submit their nominations by November 18.
