Tourists Outraged by 400-Baht Omelet at Thai Floating Market
RATCHABURI – A restaurant at the popular Damnoen Saduak floating market is under scrutiny after tourists complained of exorbitant prices, including a 400-baht plain omelet and a 1,400-baht serving of fried rice with only egg and vegetables.

The issue gained attention online after a visitor shared a bill detailing the charges, sparking widespread debate over pricing fairness at the iconic tourist destination. The restaurant, located along a canal and accessible only by boat, displayed its menu prices visibly, according to a local official.
During an inspection, the owner defended the high prices, citing steep operational costs including rent, staff wages, ingredients, and a fee of approximately 900 baht per boatload of customers delivered to the venue.

Following intervention by local authorities, the restaurant agreed to reduce its prices. Officials also pledged to review the establishment’s cost structure. Under Thai consumer protection laws, businesses found guilty of price gouging may face fines of up to 140,000 baht and/or imprisonment of up to seven years.
Officials Inspect Overpriced Food in Pattaya
This is not the first time the same restaurant has faced pricing complaints. It previously lowered the cost of a pad thai dish from 900 baht to 500 baht after a similar warning from authorities.
