Adli gave Bournemouth the lead after seven minutes, turning in Julio Soler’s delivery. The early goal put Villa behind almost immediately, but Bournemouth did not add a second before half-time.

Both managers rotated their squads for the cup tie. Bournemouth made eight changes, while Villa made nine. Despite those changes, Bournemouth built an early lead and were more effective in front of goal.

Cook’s goal exposed a costly moment for Bizot, while Rodríguez’s finish showed the value of a well-timed run and a pass into the penalty area. Villa manager Unai Emery acknowledged the disappointment after the match and pointed to the need to move forward into the next fixtures.
