Save £100 on the Galaxy A17 5G at Amazon

Just £159 down from £259 RRP

Budget smartphones have become capable enough to handle everyday tasks such as messaging, browsing, streaming and photography without the price tag of a flagship. If you want a large screen, 5G connectivity and long-term software support, Samsung’s Galaxy A series is worth considering.

The Samsung Galaxy A17 5G is currently available for £159 at Amazon, down from £259. That’s a saving of £100 (39% off). The mobile phone has generally cost between £169.99 and its £259 RRP recently, so this is a better price than you would usually pay at the moment. It isn’t an all-time low, though: the price briefly fell to £139 at the end of August, while it was also available for £155.99 in May. At £159, it’s the third-lowest price recorded so far, making it an attractive deal if you need a budget Samsung phone now.

The black model comes with 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. Amazon lists it as an Amazon’s Choice product, and more than 500 units were bought in the past month.

On Amazon US, the Galaxy A17 5G is listed at $244.99, which puts it at the higher end of the price range and makes it a less attractive deal than in the UK.

What the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G has to offer

The Galaxy A17 5G has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels and a 90Hz refresh rate. That makes scrolling look smoother than on a conventional 60Hz display.

Samsung has slimmed the frame to 7.5mm and updated the design with its Key Island 2.0 layout and a more linear camera module on the back. The phone runs Android with Samsung’s One UI interface. Its Exynos 1330 processor and 4GB of RAM are designed for everyday smartphone use, including messaging, web browsing and video streaming. However, the modest memory allowance is worth bearing in mind if you regularly switch between lots of apps or expect particularly responsive performance.

Samsung promises six generations of operating system upgrades and six years of security support. That gives the Galaxy A17 5G a longer stated support period than many budget phones. The phone also has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor to unlock it.

The rear camera system is a combination of a 50Mp main camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a 5Mp ultra-wide camera and a 2Mp macro camera. The camera system supports digital zoom up to 10x, while the front-facing camera has a 13Mp sensor for selfies and video calls.

The Galaxy A17 5G has a 5,000mAh battery, which Samsung lists with an average battery life of up to 2.5 days and talk time of up to 42 hours. Actual battery life will depend on how you use the phone. Charging is rated at 25W, with a listed charging time of 85 minutes.

Connectivity includes 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and USB-C. The phone supports dual SIM and has a microSDXC card slot for memory cards of up to 2TB, allowing you to expand storage beyond the inbuilt 128GB.

Why this offer is worth it

At £159, the Galaxy A17 5G is a reasonably priced option if you want a Samsung phone with a large AMOLED display, 5G and long software support. The discount is substantial compared with the current RRP and recent prices, even if a brief £139 offer at the end of August made it cheaper at the time. It’s worth keeping that previous low in mind if you aren’t in a hurry to buy.

Our review of the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G found plenty to like, including its sleek design, large and punchy display, slick user interface and long software support. However, we were disappointed by the lack of meaningful improvements over the Galaxy A16 5G. The main camera gains optical image stabilisation, and the design is a little thinner and lighter, but much of the hardware remains unchanged. The secondary cameras are also lacklustre, and there’s no eSIM support.

Customer feedback is generally positive about the phone’s quality, value for money and main camera. Some users report smooth performance and good battery life, while others complain that the phone can feel slow or laggy and that the battery doesn’t last as long as expected.
