Apple has a genius, but obvious solution for the iPhone Duo’s long-term display crease visibility — Explained

Apple has revealed that the iPhone Duo’s inner display has a replaceable cover layer that will enable foldable phone owners to negate the innate increase in visibility of the display crease that tends to get worse with increased usage.

In an interview with TikToker Angelica Siciliani Fendi (@AngieTurorials) Kate Bergeron, Apple VP of Hardware Engineering revealed that the iPhone Duo display can regain a day one feel with a seemingly quick replacement of the cover layer atop the matte display coating.

Bergeron said: “The matte display coating does a really nice job of, I’ll say minimising the crease. But there’s a cover layer on top, and we’ve done a significant amount of engineering work to help that wear in as long of a manner as we can, and to make sure that you get the most out of that layer’s performance. It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.”

Better still, it feels like the replacement will be really affordable, with the company charging $19 with Apple Care to replace the cover layer. As 9to5Mac points out in its reporting, it’s not clear how much it’ll cost without the warranty. And we certainly wouldn’t recommend trying this in a DIY environment.

The chance to easily add a fresh layer to the foldable handset might convince some users who are in two minds about buying an iPhone Duo for fears it may start to use its lustre over time. Apple will open pre-orders for the iPhone Duo on October 16. It is thought the company will have quite limited supplies out of the gate.
