Apple to ignore the haters and launch iPhone Air 2 anyway — Explained

The iPhone Air 2 is still very much in the works and headed for a 2027 launch with some key improvements, according to a fresh report.

Despite a disappointing reception for the original iPhone Air, Apple is said to be pushing ahead with a follow-up to “the least sensible iPhone ever”, as our own Mobile Editor Anyron Copeman labelled it.

Not until 2027, however. Reliable Apple journalist Mark Gurman has reported on Bloomberg that the iPhone Air 2 will launch in the spring of 2027.

That would represent a fresh approach from Apple, both in terms of skipping a year to rethink its super-slim smartphone concept – which we cited as a possibility – and moving the launch date to the spring window, rather than announcing it alongside the other high-end iPhone 18 models in September.

Likely iPhone Air 2 specs

As we’ve heard before, the new slim iPhone will apparently correct one of the biggest flaws of the original iPhone Air by adding a second camera.

Another key issue for the iPhone Air was its stamina, with the phone’s super-slim chassis necessitating a smaller battery than you might hope for in such a large phone.

It seems Apple will be addressing this issue too, with a boost to battery life.

Expect the new phone to run a version of Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which will likely make its debut in the iPhone 18 range towards the end of 2026.

While we weren’t bowled over by the original, it’s good to see that the iPhone Air isn’t set to go the way of the iPhone 13 Mini and the iPhone 16 Plus as the last product of its kind.

Not yet, at least.
