Here’s upgraded Amazon Fire Stick 4K is more travel-friendly with a new remote that’s great for watching in the dark

Amazon has announced a brand new Fire Stick 4K that finally dispenses with the need for an external power source. The new streaming device can now pull its power directly from your television set by plugging the cable into the USB port.

The new $60 Fire TV Stick 4K also includes a redesigned Fire TV Remote with “more tactile” controls with Amazon saying “key buttons can be found by feel, without having to even look down”.

The Home button includes a distinct metal surface, Amazon says, while other buttons are more distinctly shaped and ideal for finding in the dark. There’s also a customisable star button that can be a shortcut to your favourite app. And, the new asymmetric shape means you won’t be holding it upside down.

Furthermore, the new Fire TV Stick 4K is faster than other devices in the price range from rival brands. It turns on faster, apps launch 35% faster, and content behind playing 20% faster, the company says. Part of this is down to the streamlined Vega OS operating system and “new Fire TV experience” user interface.

The Fire Stick 4K offers 8GB of internal storage and offers quad-core 1.7GHz processor and Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth LE. In terms of resolution, you’ll get 2160p, 1080p, and 720p support at 60fps, as well as HDR10, HDR10+, HLG.

It’s available from today in the US and UK along with Canada, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland and Australia.

The model is now the middle child in the line up and sits below the $85 Fire TV Stick 4K which offers even faster speeds, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and Alexa+ Home Theatre. The cheapest model, which arrived earlier this year, is the Fire Stick HD.
