  • Chery Group exported 202,533 vehicles in July, up 70.1% year-on-year, setting a monthly record for a Chinese carmaker for the fifth consecutive month.
  • Exports accounted for nearly three-quarters of July sales, while domestic deliveries fell about 30% from a year earlier.

Chery Group said Saturday that it exported 202,533 vehicles in July, becoming the first Chinese automaker to ship more than 200,000 units overseas in a single month.

The figure was up 70.1% year-on-year and marked the fifth straight month in which the company set a monthly export record for a Chinese carmaker.

At that pace, a Chery vehicle heads overseas every 16 seconds on average, the company said.

The group's total July sales were 276,820 vehicles, up 23.3% year-on-year and a record for a single month.

New energy vehicle (NEV) sales were 129,067 units, up 97.5% year-on-year and above 100,000 for the fourth consecutive month.

Almost all of the group's growth, however, came from overseas. Exports made up 73% of July sales, compared with 53% a year earlier.

That implies domestic deliveries of about 74,000 vehicles in July, down roughly 30% year-on-year. Domestic sales in the January-July period were around 488,000 units, down about 40 percent.

Europe is a key growth engine. Between January and June, Chery sold 174,000 vehicles in 24 European countries, up 212% year-on-year, including 86,000 NEVs, up 385 percent.

The company is also accelerating localization overseas. On July 3, Chery began operations at the Rosslyn plant in South Africa acquired from Nissan, retaining all 692 employees and expecting to support nearly 3,000 jobs across the supply chain.

As of the end of July, Chery had more than 20.16 million customers globally, including over 6.99 million overseas. The group's cumulative global sales passed the 20 million mark in July.

Chery is also betting on robotics. Its Aimoga Robotics unit said on July 30 that cumulative overseas deliveries had topped 2,000 units, with products now in more than 60 countries and regions.

The Freelander 8 rolled off the line at the Changshu plant as the first product of the revived Freelander brand.
