Chery reaches 20 million sales with a third of owners outside China: A Practical Look

Chery Group said on Saturday that its cumulative global sales had passed 20 million units, making it another Chinese automaker to cross that threshold.

The 20 millionth vehicle is the Fulwin A9, which was launched today. The all-electric sedan shares its name with Chery's first model, introduced in 1997, which was also the company's earliest export to overseas markets.

Chery was founded in 1997 and in 2007 became the first Chinese brand to top 1 million cumulative vehicle sales.

The group now owns brands including Chery, Exeed, Fulwin, iCar and Jetour, with operations in more than 130 countries and regions.

Exports remain the main growth engine. Chery Group exported 943,817 vehicles in the first half of this year, up 71.5% year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

The group exported 191,062 vehicles in June alone, setting a record for monthly Chinese vehicle exports for the fourth consecutive month. That works out to one Chery vehicle heading overseas every 17 seconds.

Europe has become a core growth driver. Chery sold 174,000 vehicles in Europe from January to June, up more than 212% year-on-year.

In the UK, the company ranked in the top two for new vehicle sales across all brands for four straight months, and the Jaecoo 7 was the best-selling model in one month, according to a statement.

As of the end of June, Chery had more than 19.88 million customers worldwide, including 6.78 million overseas, or about 35% of the total. The group has been China's largest exporter of home-grown passenger vehicles for 23 consecutive years.

The domestic market, however, has been relatively subdued. Group sales totaled 1,357,533 vehicles in the first half, up just 7.7% year-on-year.

Chery is speeding up localization overseas. In early July, the company said it would restart the Rosslyn plant in South Africa that it acquired from Nissan, retaining all 692 employees.

In 2024, Chery worked with Spain's EV Motors to revive local brand Ebro, creating more than 1,000 jobs.

Chery Group now has 150,000 employees globally, including more than 20,000 outside China.
