  • CPCA estimates China's July NEV wholesales at about 1.47 million units, with year-on-year growth hitting its highest level so far in 2026.
  • BYD, Geely and Tesla China were among more than a dozen automakers posting their best-ever July.

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) wholesales are estimated to have risen 23% year-on-year in July, the fastest growth of any month in 2026, suggesting the sector's recovery is taking hold.

Wholesales of passenger NEVs by manufacturers in China are estimated at 1.47 million units in July, down 1% from June, according to preliminary data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Tuesday.

The month-on-month decline was smaller than the seasonal index would suggest, the CPCA said. The overall vehicle market remained weak over the same period, with NEVs now the core growth engine of China's passenger vehicle market.

The divergence between new energy and conventional models continues to widen. High fuel prices are the key external driver behind the strength of NEVs.

International oil prices moved higher amid renewed disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and China's retail fuel prices were raised twice in July, the CPCA noted.

Cumulative fuel price increases since the start of July came to nearly 985 yuan ($145) per ton, significantly lifting the cost of running a gasoline car.

Rising ownership costs have curbed appetite for gasoline vehicles, accelerating the shift in demand toward NEVs, the CPCA said.

Supply is improving in tandem. Mainstream automakers have optimized production scheduling and upgraded their supply chains, easing earlier delivery bottlenecks.

Exports are another source of incremental growth. High global oil prices are fueling explosive growth in overseas NEV demand.

Chinese local brands, with mature low-energy-consumption technology and strong cost performance, are displacing gasoline cars overseas and continue to win more orders, the CPCA said.

At the manufacturer level, a large number of automakers set record July wholesale figures, spanning local brands, joint ventures and startups.

They include BYD (HKEX: 1211), Geely Auto (HKEX: 0175), Chery (HKEX: 9973), Leapmotor (HKEX: 9863), Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) China, SAIC-GM-Wuling, SAIC Passenger Vehicle, Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV), Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) and Great Wall Motor, all of which posted their best-ever July.

The CPCA's estimate is based on automakers that sold more than 10,000 units at wholesale in June, whose combined NEV sales reached 1.38 million units in July.

Extrapolating from their June share, nationwide passenger NEV wholesales in July came to about 1.47 million units.

For comparison, China's passenger NEV wholesales were 1.481 million units in June, up 19% year-on-year and 10% from May.

The CPCA earlier estimated July NEV retail sales at about 980,000 units, with penetration climbing to a record high of around 64.5 percent.
