“Fun memories of seeing this bike in Rob’s shop. We used to do a “garage tour” on British bikes in San Diego. Rob would bring us into his crazy workshop which included a land speed record “bike” built around a Delta jet turbine engine. He loved this Rudge. These have high quality engineering for their time and currently have decent parts availability through UK owner’s club. Thanks for bringing to BaT!”

I’m Bob Gunthorp. I have a 1959 190b Binz station wagon Binz body number 1540. It is registered as a 1963. I purchased it in 1984. They are a fun car to drive and they attract attention everywhere that you take them. In 2012 I showed the wagon at the Mercedes-Benz Club National StarFest event in Phoenix AZ. The wagon is a “driver” car and not 100 point restoration. To both my surprise and amazement the wagon received the judge’s choice award.

“I had one of these ‘beasts’ back in the 1970s, nowhere as nice as this Mercedes. I terrorized northern Virginia & the D.C. area for several years…..it sounded like a washing-machine full of marbles & smoked like I was spraying for locusts! But that Benz ran for ever, even on kerosene!
I wound up trading it for a Nikon motor-drive camera. My Mercedes wound up as ‘yard-art’ in Annapolis, Maryland…..but that diesel engine ran for years operating hoist equipment on a ‘waterman’s’…”9

“Stunning car! The 5 speed transaxle fitted to Boras was also used in other cars- the deTomaso Mangusta and Pantera, Ford GT40s, BMW M1s.. perhaps others I’m not aware of. A robust unit of considerable versatility, it is still in production in the USA by RBT Inc. The ZF 5DS-25 (its actual name) has been through several revisions, including adding a sixth speed, I think. Its only vice is that it’s hard to obtain and when you can, it costs STACKS of money.”

“Quick comment here! See the white sticker on the bottom corner of the windshield on driver’s side? This is the genuine RCA sticker for parking lot, when Pat Ieraci owned this Volvo since it was new. Pat Ieraci was the influence with RCA to sign Jefferson Airplane. I emailed with (the late) Ieraci’s daughter. She remembered the Volvo with fondness and said her father dearly loved the car. “Funny story – I was trying to find a correct new radiator cap for the TR4. I had gotten one from a British parts supplier, but it didn’t fit correctly. I grabbed my identical radiator from my project TR4 and went to the local parts stores to see what they had. Total strikeout. I went to Panda Express with TR4 radiator caps on my mind and got this fortune cookie. I immediately sent a picture of it to my wife saying “Looks like I’m getting another car!”.”

“Anyone buying an RX7 that’s been sitting for a long time should assume it needs apex seals unless proven otherwise. The dash and radio are lit up in some pics, so the car has electrical power. I’m guessing lack of power is the result of a few horses escaping the engine bay.
This FD is quite tempting. I have a few solutions for lack of power sitting in the corner of the shop ;)”11

“I own a higher mileage AZ-1 just like this. It is awesome. Obviously the new owner will likely keep this stock, but upgrading the suspension to the Navic coilovers and adding a stiffer roll bar front and back dramatically changed the handling.
