“Been a car guy for 70 years. Everything from a ‘31 Chevy sedan to an F40. Last spring I stopped in for a visit at our new local McLaren store for a look around. I’d read a lot about issues with the earlier cars but those were mostly software related. Anyway, given my advanced age I decided to get one before I roll over for the last time. So I bought a new GTS to add to my modest stable. Never have had any trouble whatsoever. I drive it a couple times a week and it stays on the maintainer…”

“I owned an ‘85 nearly identical to this. I drove it the way Carroll Shelby intended. I quickly installed the Mopar Performance logic module and after getting the timing dialed in and an AutoMeter boost gauge installed, I was even more ready to “Go Like Hell.” So, one Friday evening in the spring, I was laying down rubber in first and second gear at each stop.

“Automatics are great – First, generally driven less spiritedly over their lifetime. Second, the automatic is actually very good. My auto on back roads, 2nd gear could go from about 25 mph to 70 mph. Often with a group of other 02s, I would be pushing the car in front of me that was modified. Third, the auto works while you find that 5 speed that is wider than a 4 speed and what else is wider? The tunnel in an automatic. No hammer needed for installation.

“Jimmy Don Ventura had owned enough unusual automobiles over the years to believe he understood the public. He’d driven a lime-green AMC Gremlin, a Triumph Spitfire that leaked oil with the determination of an East Texas mosquito, and a Plymouth Barracuda that had once stranded him in front of the Dairy Twin during the lunch rush. Every one of them had attracted comments, questions, and unsolicited mechanical advice from complete strangers.

“Seeing this car at the recent BaT show in Portland instantly made me miss my ERA 289 FIA, chassis #143. I spent countless hours researching Cobra replicas before choosing ERA, then painstakingly spec’d every detail of my car and had it built by some of the best in the business. We sold it on BaT a few years ago for $133,000, and I still think about it.

The automobile manufacturers currently lack the mechanisms to ever build a car like this again supercharged V8 stick shift an aluminum frame etc. All the low mileage cars and after that all the Ford Gt‘s will approach $1 million. They’re the least maintenance auto in anyone’s collection..”

I was McQueen’s photo-double and stand-in during the filming of The Sand Pebbles when I received my ‘Greetings’ letter from the draft board. Steve and Neile invited us to ‘the Castle’ for dinner. My 912 began some serious noise and I took it to a Porsche shop Steve recommended. Something was wrong with the factory half axle or axles and, they required replacement/upgrading. I thought the E500 6.0 sold last year was the peak, but I sit corrected, has to be this one. Stunning in every way, GLWTA!”
