1. Find Your Niche
Before we get down to setting up a blog, we first have to pick a niche. A blog niche is a specific topic that you’ll be writing about in your blog.
You’re probably wondering why you need a blog niche, isn’t a ‘mom blog’ a niche in itself? Well, not exactly, and here’s why.
Under “mom” blogs there’s a huge range of niched down blogs, such as mom lifestyle blogs, parenting advice blogs, healthy meals blogs, traveling blogs, and so much more.
It is hard to build a target audience if your content is scattered, however, if you stick to a topic, readers that are interested in one of your posts are likely to be interested in your other posts too.
A key tip is to be specific about your target audience when deciding on your blog niche.
For example, instead of writing for all moms, write for moms who are interested in healthy meals for their families.
Having a niched-down blog also makes it easier for your ideal audience to find you online and build brand loyalty.
Choose your niche by simply asking yourself these questions:
- What are you passionate about?
- What will be beneficial and interesting to moms?
- Is the topic you’ve chosen profitable?
The sweet spot is where your personal interest in a niche, a need for that niche, and the profitability of that niche intersect.
To get the juices flowing, here are some mom blog niche ideas:
- Parenting
- Home Management
- Cleaning Tips
- DIY Crafts for kids
- Healthy Meals for kids
- BLW meals for babies
- Productivity Ideas for Busy Moms
- Frugal Living
- Mommy Skincare
- Traveling with kids
Keep in mind that the more niched down your blog is, you’ll be able to help your target audience better.
Just in case you are curious here are some successful mommy bloggers, kicking butt in the blogging industry !

2. Name Your Blog
Now that you’ve settled on a niche, the next step to starting a mommy blog is to give your blog a name!
Coming up with your blog’s name can be overwhelming as there are so many ways you can go about naming your blog.
So here are some factors to consider when picking out the right blog name for you.
- Choose a name that is relevant to your niche and target audience
It would be best for your blog name to be somewhat relevant to the content of your blog, this will allow readers to relate your blog name with your niche.
I mean, think about it, It wouldn’t make sense to name your blog “Mom’s Recipes” when you’re writing about DIY crafts.
It will only confuse your audience and make it harder for your target audience to find you.
OutandBeyond started off as a travel blog and has evolved into a personal finance blog.
So you also want to make sure you’re blog name isn’t restricted to a particular niche, and leaves you enough wiggle room in case you decide to change your blog’s course.
- Choose a name that is short, and easy to spell, and pronounce
You also want to ensure that your blog name isn’t complicated, ambiguous, or too long for anyone to remember. The goal is to make it memorable, captivating, and easy to search for. It will also help if you limit your blog name to 5 words at most.
- Ensure it’s available as a .com
People tend to assume that a URL ends in .com 3.8 times more compared to other top-level domains. So make sure that your chosen blog name is available as a .com domain.
Check if your domain name is available through this site.
Don’t get too caught up in finding the perfect name and waste precious time that could be used to set up your blog. Just as long as you keep these factors in mind, your blog name should be good to go.

The first thing you need to do is design your blog.
Your blog’s design matters. I recommend that the design of your blog reflects your blog niche, is simple and straightforward, and should be focused on highlighting your content.
Once you’ve set up your site, you’ll have to pick a theme. With WordPress, you can choose from a huge range of free and premium themes that have more features.

6. Write Your First Blog Posts
Once your blog has been set up, the following step on how to start a mommy blog is a pretty exciting one….writing your first blog post.
Deciding on what to write as your first blog post can be intimidating, but I’m here to help you make it happen!
However, before writing your first post and directing traffic to your page, you’ll want to have the following setup:
- A Blog Menu
Menus are super important for a blog as it helps users navigate the site. Menus are often placed at the top of the site and will typically include your key pages such as ‘About Me’.
- About Me Page
This page is definitely a ‘must-have’ for all bloggers as it informs readers who the face of the blog is, which will build trust amongst your audience. Here you can share your blog’s purpose, vision, and what readers can expect to see on your blog.
A great tip for when you’ve started writing, use this page to showcase your high-performing content.
- Contact Me Page
A contact page will encourage readers to connect with you. It will also allow businesses that want to collaborate with you or engage your services a swift and simple way to get in touch.
On your contact page, you can add your email address and social media profiles, or, if you don’t want to share your contact details, you can add a contact form.
Now that you have the menu, and important pages set up, let’s get to writing your first blog post. Let’s get to brainstorming, here are a few things to consider before deciding on your first few posts.
- Research
Once you’ve settled on a niche, research your competition. Take a look at the best blogs in your niche’s content, and take note of their most popular posts, this will give you a picture of what your audience is interested in.
- Write Posts With Different Goals
Write your first few posts with these goals in mind:
- To drive traffic – ‘How To’ Posts
- To build your email list – offer guides, planners, freebies
- To make you money – product reviews, lists
For example, if your mom blog niche is food, your first few posts can look like this:
- How To Meal Prep For School Lunches
- 30 Day Meal Plan For Busy Parents
- Time Saving Kitchen Utensils For Busy Moms

7. Create Time To Blog
Learning how to start a mommy blog and setting it up can be done in an hour. Growing it into a successful, money-making blog, well, that takes time.
Being a mom is already a full-time job, you’ll need to manage your time well if you want your blog to thrive! The cost for setting up a blog is fairly low compared to other businesses, and if you are dedicated, you’ll start seeing that it can be very profitable.
To start seeing results, you’ll have to treat your blog just like a job, you’ll have to set aside time weekly if not daily.
For the initial few months, I recommend that you focus on churning out great content, so that when readers visit your blog, there are other posts for them to browse through.
You’ll also get an idea of what type of content your audience is interested in.
Here are a two simple methods you can use to manage your time.
- Have A Schedule
When you’re a mom, your schedule can be unpredictable but I advise that you try to stick to a daily routine for blogging that works for you on most days.
If the only times you can write are early in the mornings and late in the evenings, that is fine. Create a schedule around the hours that you find yourself most free, even if it’s little pockets of time.
Several hours a day is better than nothing. Scheduling might not be your thing but there are so many benefits and you’ll be able to prioritize tasks better.
If you have little ones, try block scheduling to give yourself some leeway, the Pomodoro method is a popular block scheduling technique that allows you to get work done in a quick 20 mins block of time.
The key is to create a schedule that works best for YOU and your family and remember that it’s okay if things don’t always go to plan, life with kids is uncertain at times.
- Have Clear Goals And A Timeline
Once you’ve created your schedule and know how you want to spend your time, get clear on how you want to spend that time.
Having clear goals will help you make the most of your free time and understand what you want to achieve with your blog.
So start thinking about what goals you want to set for your mom blog and a timeline to achieve them. Blogging is for the long haul, most bloggers start earning from their blog in a period of 6 to 12 months.
The best way to achieve your blogging goals in my opinion is to set your short-term goals (6 months to a year) based on your long-term goals ( 3 to 5 years).
Here are some examples of goals to get you started on your blog:
- Design and launch your mom blog by __/__/__
- Publish the first 50 blogposts by __/__/__
- Grow your traffic by 5,000 unique visitors a month by __/__/__
- Generate $1000 per month by __/__/__

Here’s how you can start increasing your blog’s traffic:
- Publish Posts Consistently
To increase traffic to your website you have to post frequently. It would be ideal to post three to four times a week, however, that may not always be possible. For a start, commit to posting at least once a week.
It’s also important to ensure that you’re putting out quality content, content that is relevant to your audience, organized, and with proper grammar.
It would also be great for your blog in the long run if you consistently created pillar posts, these posts are evergreen and will continuously bring in new visitors.
- Promote Your Blog
A great way to bring in traffic for your blog is to also promote it across the following avenues:
- Social Media
To promote your blog with zero costs, use the power of social media.
Join online mom groups, these groups encourage moms to share insight, tips, and their journeys. Join in on the conversations and link your blog posts any time the opportunity arises.
Create a social media presence for your blog or leverage your personal brand on any of the popular platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
If you are not on any of these platforms, here’s an opportunity for you to grow your blog and social media presence side by side, it’s a great way to build a loyal following.
- Guest Posts
Another great way to build authority as a blogger is to write a guest post for another blog in the same niche as you. This way you introduce new audiences that will be interested in your content.
- Drive Traffic with Search Engine Optimisation ‘SEO’
As Google is the largest search engine, this generally means how to drive traffic from Google.

Now, the final step on how to start a mom blog and make it successful is to start building an e-mail list.
What is an email list? Well, an email list is a directory of email addresses from readers who have subscribed to get updates on your blog and purchased a product or service from your blog.
Building an email list is so powerful, simply because the people who sign up to your email list truly are interested in your content. The people on your email list are your ideal audience and they are more likely to show interest in your products.

Next, you want to look at creating opt-in forms that’ll encourage readers to subscribe to your email list.
You can do that by installing a WordPress plugin, WP Subscribe is a free lightweight plugin with basic features whilst there are several premium options that will create beautiful forms for you.

Once you’ve set up your opt-in forms and chosen an email marketing service provider, you’ll need to focus on growing your email list.
As a newbie blogger, a simple way to increase your subscribers is to provide incentives to make them take action.
Offer valuable information or access to free products like e-books, a guide, and a step-by-step plan.
