The great eared nightjar (Lyncornis macrotis) is found living in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. A nocturnal bird, they flit through the forest under the cover of darkness. Apart from their unique appearance, another unique thing they do is build their nest on the forest floor. This allows their chicks to use their well-camouflaged appearance amongst all the dried leaves.

This bird could easily have flown right out of a Harry Potter movie, bringing to life the fantasy world many of us love. Although there are other species of nightjar, none look quite as unique as the great-eared ones. This bird quite simply is one of a kind.
