Chelsea star Emi Martinez ‘back in a few weeks’ as star breaks silence after operation to fix fractured jaw

He contested the ball with Jarrad Branthwaite before they smashed into each other, with the Blues man coming off worse.

He was placed on a backboard and transported to hospital, with Mike Penders coming on to replace him.

But now the star and his wife have revealed that his surgery on a fractured jaw has been successful and that the outlook is a positive one, claiming he will be back in action in just weeks.

Martinez’s wife Mandinha first wrote on Instagram on Saturday night: “Thank you all for the lovely messages and for checking in on Emi.

“He’s doing fine, it’s nothing serious, and he’ll soon be back to his usual self.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for so much love and support.”

It was revealed on Saturday that the star was set to undergo surgery on his jaw following the scary incident.

But himself Martinez then spoke out in the early hours of Sunday morning to confirm the procedure had been successful.

He also shared a snap of him giving a gesture from his hospital bed.

He said: “Thanks to everyone for the messages. The surgery went well.

“The most important thing is that we won and kept a clean sheet.
We’ll be back in a few weeks.”

Chelsea also confirmed the operation had been a success.

A club statement said: “Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw.

“Martinez was injured following a collision midway through the second half of our 2-0 victory over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.

“Martinez was taken to hospital for further assessment, which confirmed a fractured jaw that required surgery.

“Everyone at Chelsea wishes Emi a speedy recovery and will support him throughout.”

In the aftermath of Chelsea’s 2-0 win at Everton, Blues boss Xabi Alonso revealed the 34-year-old World Cup winner was in hospital.

He said: “As far as I know he left the stadium conscious. Right now he’s in the hospital doing precautionary tests, so let’s see. But this is what I know so far.”

Chelsea’s veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson also said: “He’s very important. It looked pretty bad actually so I hope he’s okay.

“All the lads and everyone will be thinking of him and texting him so fingers crossed it’s nothing major and he can be back with us pretty soon because he’s a really important figure not only on the pitch but around the dressing room too.”

Saturday afternoon’s win marked Chelsea’s first Premier League clean sheet in nine months as they rose to fourth ahead of Brentford on 13 points.
