Alzarri Joseph responds to Darren Sammy’s selection remarks

BRIDGETOWN: West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has responded to comments made by head coach Darren Sammy regarding his absence from the ongoing Test series against Pakistan, saying his decision was taken out of context and has created a misleading public perception. The controversy emerged after Cricket West Indies initially cited “personal reasons” for Joseph’s unavailability. However, subsequent remarks by Sammy suggested that the pacer had declined selection for the series, sparking widespread discussion among cricket fans and analysts. In a statement, Joseph clarified that his decision was based solely on his physical condition following a lengthy recovery from his second stress fracture in the back within the past year. The fast bowler explained that he had only recently returned to Test cricket and had already played two demanding Tests against Sri Lanka, followed by five consecutive One-Day Internationals against New Zealand. After that workload, he felt his body was not ready for another Test series without adequate rest. Joseph said the coach’s comments were made without presenting the full background, leading many to misunderstand his position. “I believe the remarks were incomplete and created the wrong impression among the public,” he said, stressing that his commitment to West Indies cricket remains unchanged. The 29-year-old also dismissed suggestions that he had turned his back on the national team, saying he has always been proud to represent the West Indies whenever he is physically fit. Joseph reaffirmed that he remains a professional cricketer dedicated to serving his country and its supporters. He added that his responsibility is to the West Indies team and the people of the Caribbean, not to any individual. His clarification comes as the West Indies continue their Test campaign against Pakistan, with discussions over player workload and injury management increasingly becoming an important issue in international cricket. The latest exchange has highlighted the challenges teams face in balancing player fitness with the demands of a packed international schedule.

Babar Azam’s England Test return in doubt after hand injury

LEEDS: Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s participation in the opening Test against England has become uncertain after the star batter suffered a blow to his hand during a practice match against the PCC Select XI. Babar was batting on five in the 39th over when a delivery from fast bowler Manny Lumsden struck his hand. The right-hander immediately appeared uncomfortable and received treatment from the team’s medical staff before retiring hurt. The Pakistan Cricket Board later advised Babar to rest as a precaution, but a final decision on his availability for the first Test has not yet been made. The development comes at a crucial moment for Pakistan, with the three-match Test series against England scheduled to begin on Wednesday at Headingley. Babar had returned as Pakistan’s Test captain earlier this year and was selected to lead the side throughout the England tour. Babar’s possible absence would be a significant concern for Pakistan, particularly given his importance in the middle order and his leadership role. The team management is expected to take no risks with the experienced batter and will assess his condition before confirming the playing XI. Babar briefly took part in a training session at Headingley on Monday, offering some encouragement to Pakistan. However, his availability is expected to be assessed again after Tuesday’s practice session, when the medical team should have a clearer picture of his recovery. Meanwhile, Shan Masood has also resumed training in Leeds and could feature in the opening Test. Shan had been sidelined after fracturing a finger while batting during the first Test against the West Indies in Tarouba. Despite the injury, he returned to the crease in the second innings but was unable to bat in his regular position. Subsequent scans confirmed the fracture, ruling him out of the second Test. Pakistan will hope both senior batters are fit as they prepare for a demanding series in England. The first Test is scheduled for August 19-23 at Headingley, followed by matches at Lord’s and Edgbaston. With the opener only days away, Babar’s fitness has emerged as one of the biggest talking points around Pakistan’s preparations. The team will await medical clearance before deciding whether its captain is ready to take the field. Pakistan squad Babar Azam (c), Aamir Jamal, Ali Usman, Abdullah Shafique, Azan Awais, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Awais Zafar, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wk), Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel* (subject to fitness), Shan Masood and Ubaid Shah.

  • England and women’s ashes 2027 schedule announced amid debate over northern venues

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has officially revealed the schedules for the men’s and women’s Ashes series in 2027, with both competitions set to take place in England during the summer. The men’s Ashes series will begin on June 18 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, while the women’s Ashes campaign will start six days later with a one-off Test match at Headingley in Leeds on June 24. The announcement has created controversy because no men’s Ashes Test match has been scheduled in the north of England, despite the region’s long and historic connection with the rivalry. Famous cricket venues such as Headingley and Manchester’s Old Trafford have been excluded from the 2027 men’s series, a decision that has attracted criticism from several figures in English cricket. Both Headingley and Old Trafford have played important roles in Ashes history and have witnessed some of the greatest moments in the sport. Headingley was the stage where Australia’s legendary batter Don Bradman produced two memorable triple centuries during the 1930s. The ground has also hosted some of England’s most iconic performances, including Ian Botham’s remarkable displays during the 1981 Ashes series. More recently, Headingley became famous worldwide after Ben Stokes produced an unforgettable unbeaten century in 2019, guiding England to a dramatic one-wicket victory over Australia. Old Trafford, meanwhile, has also been the setting for many historic Ashes battles and has traditionally been considered one of England’s most important cricket grounds. The absence of northern venues from the 2027 schedule has been criticised by former England captain Michael Atherton. Writing in The Times, Atherton questioned the decision and described it as disappointing that the north had been overlooked. He pointed out the timing of the announcement, coming when greater political attention is being given to expanding opportunities and investment outside London and the south-east. The entire five-Test men’s Ashes series in 2027 will now be played across venues in the Midlands and southern England. Trent Bridge will host the opening Test from June 18, followed by the second Test at Lord’s in London from June 30. The third match will take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 8, while Hampshire’s Rose Bowl near Southampton will host its first-ever Ashes Test from July 21. The series will finish with the fifth Test at The Oval in south London, beginning on July 29. The Rose Bowl will become the 10th venue in the United Kingdom to stage a men’s Ashes Test match. Meanwhile, Headingley and Old Trafford are expected to return to the Ashes schedule in 2031. Australia currently holds the Ashes after securing a dominant 4-1 victory on home soil during the 2025/26 series. The previous Ashes contest in England ended in a closely fought 2-2 draw in 2023. England’s most recent Ashes triumph came in 2015, when they won the home series 3-2. Before the Ashes begins, England are scheduled to face Bangladesh in a one-off Test match at Lord’s starting on May 28. The Oval will also host the 2027 World Test Championship final from June 9, marking the second time the famous ground has staged the event. As part of their preparation for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in southern Africa, England will also play 10 One-Day Internationals, including five matches against New Zealand and five against Pakistan. The busy schedule promises a major summer of international cricket, although the decision to exclude northern England from the men’s Ashes fixtures is likely to remain a subject of debate among fans and former players.
