Messi fined by MLS after tense clash with Philadelphia star

MIAMI: Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer after becoming involved in a heated late-game confrontation with Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw with Philadelphia.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced the punishment on Friday, saying Messi had violated the league’s policy concerning players putting their hands to the face, head or neck of an opponent. The amount of the fine was not disclosed.

Inter Miami teammate Ian Fray was also fined an undisclosed amount for the same violation, adding another disciplinary twist to an already tense encounter.

The incident occurred deep into stoppage time on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Subaru Park. With the ball being played elsewhere, Messi approached Sullivan near the centre circle following an exchange between the players.

Messi then made contact with Sullivan around the head and neck area. Sullivan responded by confronting the Argentine star, leading to a tense face-to-face exchange before officials intervened.

Referee Filip Dujic had initially not seen the incident because his back was turned. He arrived shortly afterwards to separate the players but did not issue either Messi or Quinn Sullivan a card for the confrontation.

The match later descended into further chaos in stoppage time. Quinn Sullivan became involved in another altercation with Inter Miami’s Ian Fray, while Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan and Miami midfielder Yannick Bright were also involved in the ensuing scuffle.

Cavan Sullivan and Bright were both sent off, turning an already dramatic finish into a disciplinary flashpoint. Cavan Sullivan’s red-card suspension was later overturned on appeal, making him available for Philadelphia’s next match.

Despite the controversy, Messi had a major influence on the match itself. He provided an assist before scoring Inter Miami’s second goal in the 26th minute, curling a left-footed effort into the corner.

The goal was particularly emotional for the 39-year-old Argentine, as it was his first since returning to action following the death of his father, Jorge Messi.

Philadelphia eventually fought back to earn a 2-2 draw, with Neil Pierre scoring in the second half to level the contest.

For Messi, the match therefore ended on two very different notes: a memorable goal and assist on the field, followed by an unexpected disciplinary sanction.

The MLS fine does not carry a suspension, but it serves as a reminder that even one of football’s biggest stars remains subject to the league’s conduct rules.

With the regular season intensifying, both Messi and Inter Miami will now hope the incident remains a footnote rather than becoming a distraction from their push for success.

Shaheen Afridi gives cautious reply on Pakistan captaincy

Pakistan ODI captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has avoided giving a long-term commitment about his leadership ahead of the 2027 ICC World Cup, saying that he remains captain “for now”. Speaking at a joint press conference with the captains of the teams participating in the National Champions Cup, Shaheen was asked whether he had received assurances that he would continue leading Pakistan until the World Cup. His response was brief. “For now, I am the captain,” he said. The left-arm fast bowler also stressed the importance of the Champions Cup in preparing Pakistan for the global tournament. He said the competition would help the national team build a wider pool of players and identify suitable replacements in case of injuries. Shaheen pointed out that injuries have frequently affected Pakistan’s World Cup campaigns. He said having additional players ready would make it easier for the team management to deal with any fitness concerns before the 2027 tournament. He added that the Champions Cup would allow players to perform in their preferred positions while competing against strong domestic opposition. According to Shaheen, the tournament will be important not only for individual players but also for assessing the overall strength and fitness of the national squad. He said the performances of players during the competition would help selectors identify those capable of contributing to Pakistan’s World Cup plans. “Our focus is on the World Cup,” Shaheen said, stressing that consistent performances and fitness would be key factors in selection. The National Champions Cup is scheduled to begin on Tuesday at Multan Cricket Stadium. Four teams will participate in the competition: Pakistan Greens, Pakistan Whites, Pakistan Blues and Pakistan Gold. Each team will face the others once during the league stage. The top two sides will qualify for the final, which is scheduled for August 18. The tournament’s trophy unveiling ceremony was held earlier, with the captains of all four teams attending the event. Pakistan announces second consecutive cut in petro…

The Government of Pakistan has announced another reduction in the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel, marking the second consecutive day of relief for consumers. The revised fuel prices will come into effect from August 5, 2026, according to an official notification issued by the Ministry of Energy’s Petroleum Division. The notification stated that the latest revision has been made under the petroleum pricing mechanism recommended by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). The adjustment reflects the government’s ongoing review of petroleum product prices in line with market conditions and regulatory recommendations. Under the new rates, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been reduced by Rs4.07 per litre, bringing the new price down from Rs389.93 to Rs385.86 per litre. Diesel is widely used in Pakistan’s transportation, agriculture, and industrial sectors, making the reduction significant for businesses and consumers alike. Petrol prices have also been lowered by Rs3.39 per litre. Following the latest cut, petrol will now cost Rs328.56 per litre, compared to the previous price of Rs331.95 per litre. The reduction is expected to provide some financial relief to motorists and households dealing with high transportation costs. This announcement comes just a day after the government had already reduced fuel prices. On the previous day, petrol prices were cut by Rs4.08 per litre, while diesel prices were lowered by Rs2.45 per litre. The back-to-back reductions indicate a continued effort to pass on the benefit of changing petroleum market trends to consumers. Fuel prices play a vital role in Pakistan’s economy because they directly influence transportation expenses, production costs, and inflation. Lower fuel prices can help reduce operating costs for businesses, improve supply chain efficiency, and ease the financial burden on consumers. However, the overall economic impact will depend on global oil prices, exchange rate movements, and future government pricing decisions. The Ministry of Energy emphasized that the revised prices are based on the pricing mechanism established by OGRA and approved by the federal government. The new rates will officially take effect on August 5, 2026, and will remain applicable until the next scheduled review. The latest reduction in petrol and diesel prices is expected to be welcomed by consumers, transport operators, and businesses, offering short-term relief amid ongoing economic challenges and fluctuating international oil markets.

Netanyahu reacts to Trump’s Saudi deal condi…

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the potential inclusion of Saudi Arabia in the Abraham Accords as a “historic” step for the Middle East, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement that a proposed US-Saudi civilian nuclear agreement would depend on the Kingdom formally joining the normalization pact. According to Reuters, Netanyahu shared his reaction in a post on X, calling Saudi participation in the Abraham Accords a major breakthrough that could reshape the region’s future and strengthen peace and security across the Middle East. “Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords would be a historic and tremendous development for peace and stability in the region,” Netanyahu said, without directly referring to the proposed civilian nuclear agreement between Washington and Riyadh. His remarks came shortly after President Trump revealed that the United States is prepared to move forward with a civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia—but only if the Kingdom officially becomes part of the Abraham Accords, the US-backed normalization framework that established diplomatic ties between Israel and several Arab nations. Trump’s condition has immediately placed renewed global attention on the long-discussed possibility of Saudi-Israeli normalization, an issue widely regarded as one of the most significant diplomatic challenges in the Middle East. While Netanyahu welcomed the idea of Saudi Arabia joining the agreement, he carefully avoided commenting on Trump’s specific proposal linking the nuclear deal to normalization. His statement instead focused on the broader regional benefits that such a move could bring. The Abraham Accords, first signed in 2020, normalized relations between Israel and countries including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan. Saudi Arabia has repeatedly maintained that any formal normalization with Israel would depend on progress toward resolving the Palestinian issue, making the latest US proposal particularly significant. Analysts say Trump’s latest announcement could revive diplomatic negotiations that had slowed amid regional tensions and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. However, they also caution that Riyadh’s position remains closely tied to broader political and security considerations. Whether the proposed civilian nuclear agreement can pave the way for Saudi Arabia’s entry into the Abraham Accords remains uncertain. Still, Netanyahu’s swift endorsement highlights Israel’s strong interest in expanding the landmark agreement and bringing the region’s largest Arab economy into the normalization framework, a move that could significantly alter the Middle East’s diplomatic landscape.

A tragic road accident involving a heavy vehicle claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy and left another person injured in Karachi on Tuesday, raising fresh concerns over road safety and the movement of heavy traffic across the city. According to rescue officials, the accident occurred near Gulshan Hadeed Turn in the Steel Town area when a trailer collided with a motorcycle carrying two riders. The impact of the crash proved fatal for one of the riders, who died at the scene, while the second rider sustained injuries. The deceased was identified as 17-year-old Usman, a resident of Shah Latif Town. Rescue teams responded promptly to the incident and shifted both the victim’s body and the injured person to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for legal formalities and medical treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identity or condition of the injured individual. Police officials from Steel Town stated that the trailer driver was taken into custody immediately after the accident. The trailer involved in the collision has also been seized as part of the investigation. A case is being processed, and authorities are examining the circumstances that led to the crash. The latest incident adds to a growing number of fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles in Karachi, where trailers, dumpers, and trucks have frequently been linked to deadly road crashes. Such incidents have repeatedly sparked public concern over traffic management, enforcement of road safety regulations, and the operation of heavy vehicles on busy roads. Residents and road safety advocates have urged authorities to implement stricter measures, including better monitoring of heavy transport vehicles, improved driver training, and stronger enforcement of traffic laws. Many believe that regulating the movement of heavy vehicles during peak traffic hours could significantly reduce the risk of similar accidents. The investigation into the Gulshan Hadeed accident is ongoing, and police are expected to determine whether negligence or traffic violations contributed to the fatal collision. Meanwhile, the loss of another young life has once again highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive road safety reforms to prevent further tragedies on Karachi’s roads.
