Tim Seifert’s 72 powers Manchester to maiden Hundred title

LONDON: New Zealand batter Tim Seifert produced a sensational display of power hitting as Manchester Super Giants chased down 159 against Trent Rockets to win their maiden men’s Hundred title by five wickets at Lord’s on Sunday.

Seifert’s explosive 72 off just 38 balls transformed the chase and put Manchester in control before Liam Dawson held his nerve during a dramatic final over to complete a memorable victory.

The Super Giants appeared to be cruising before the Rockets launched a late fightback. With Manchester needing only three runs from the final nine balls, Mohammad Amir struck twice in successive deliveries, removing Heinrich Klaasen and Michael Bracewell.

Ben Sanderson then delivered two consecutive dot balls, leaving Manchester needing three runs from three deliveries.

Dawson responded in emphatic fashion. The experienced batter launched the next delivery over the mid-wicket boundary for six, sealing victory with two balls still remaining and sparking celebrations among the Manchester camp.

Earlier, Seifert had almost single-handedly shifted the momentum of the final. The right-hander attacked the Rockets’ bowling from the outset, smashing seven sixes and four fours in a breathtaking innings.

The Rockets briefly thought they had removed the danger man when Seifert was on 33. Finn Allen produced a spectacular effort near the boundary, but the catch was ruled out after Allen’s foot touched the rope before he completed the attempt.

Seifert continued his assault and eventually equalled Will Jacks’ record for the highest individual score in a men’s Hundred final.

His performance capped an outstanding tournament. Seifert finished as the competition’s second-highest run-scorer, behind Australia’s Mitchell Marsh, accumulating 394 runs at an average just below 50.

For Manchester Super Giants, the triumph ended years of frustration. The Old Trafford-based franchise, previously known as Manchester Originals, had reached two men’s finals before Sunday but failed to lift the trophy, including a defeat by Trent Rockets in 2022.

The Rockets, meanwhile, were left to rue a missed opportunity after topping the men’s table and earning a direct place in the final.

They had also hoped to make history by becoming the first franchise to win both the men’s and women’s Hundred titles in the same season.

Instead, it was Manchester’s night at Lord’s, with Seifert’s extraordinary hitting and Dawson’s cool finish delivering the franchise its long-awaited first men’s Hundred crown.

The Pakistani javelin thrower is now planning to train in South Africa. He has previously completed training camps in the country on two occasions. Following his training in South Africa, Nadeem will compete at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. The championship is scheduled to take place in Budapest from September 6 to 14.     India’s top court orders release of minors amid exam protests

    NEW DELHI: India’s Supreme Court has ordered authorities to release minors detained during protests over examination paper leaks and directed officials to preserve evidence linked to allegations of excessive police force. Chief Justice Surya Kant reportedly issued the interim directions while hearing petitions filed by student protesters and activists. The petitions accuse police and paramilitary personnel of using excessive force, including baton charges and other crowd-control measures, against demonstrators. The court also directed authorities to preserve all available surveillance material from the protests. This includes CCTV recordings, drone footage and body-camera video. Officials were further told to protect the personal and digital information of protesters and ensure that it is not publicly disclosed. The court reportedly barred authorities from taking coercive action against protesters while the matter remains under consideration. Justice Kant stressed the importance of an independent investigation into allegations of mistreatment. He said accountability must be established if wrongdoing occurred. The government has defended the security forces’ response, describing the measures as necessary for crowd control. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that around 250 police officers were also injured during the unrest. He reportedly said the government had no objection to an investigation into allegations involving protesters. The protests erupted after question papers for a national medical college entrance examination were leaked. The controversy triggered demonstrations in New Delhi and several other parts of India. Protesters demanded reforms to the examination system, withdrawal of cases against demonstrators and compensation for families of students who died by suicide following the controversy. The demonstrations ended after the education minister resigned and the government agreed to several demands raised by the protesters. Meanwhile, the Indian government has proposed tougher penalties for examination paper leaks. Under the proposed amendments, the maximum prison sentence could be increased to 10 years, while fines could rise to more than $1 million. The government says the proposed changes are intended to strengthen the examination system, speed up legal proceedings and restore confidence among students and young people. The issue has also created political tension in parliament. Opposition lawmakers have repeatedly raised concerns about the police response to the protests and demanded accountability. In several cities, clashes between demonstrators and security personnel led to tear gas and baton charges. Authorities also suspended a police officer in an eastern state after he allegedly fired rounds into the air while attempting to disperse student protesters. Concerns have additionally emerged over the use of artificial intelligence-powered surveillance during demonstrations. Activists have questioned the deployment of police surveillance equipment capable of providing wide-area monitoring of protest gatherings. A protest group that helped lead the movement has claimed that hundreds of students were arrested in different states. However, the figure has not been independently verified.

It began with his role as a fraudulent godman in “Aashram” and continued with his widely praised villainous turn in “Animal.” Since then, he’s taken on similar roles in projects including “Hari Har Veera Mallu,” “Kanguva,” “Daaku Maharaj,” “Alpha” and “Jana Nayagan.” The pattern has left him closely associated with antagonist roles across recent years. Despite that string of successes, Deol said he is actively working to branch out into different kinds of projects. He explained that he understands why actors get pulled toward roles tied to their biggest hits, but he is determined to keep experimenting further. He revealed he recently wrapped a film called “Bandar,” describing it as a distinctly different kind of project from his recent work. Deol added that even within villain roles, there’s plenty of range to explore, since antagonists can carry very different tones and shades. He said he genuinely enjoys playing those varied versions of darker characters. Deol also confirmed he is set to appear in a few upcoming web series, which he says will offer something noticeably different from his recent filmography. On the work front, Deol is next set to appear in “Teen Kauwe,” a Hindi spy thriller series co-starring Ishaan Gupta, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Pavail Gulati. The show is currently in production and is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 2, 2026.
