US, Saudi Arabia sign major civil nuclear cooperation agreement

The United States and Saudi Arabia have signed a major civil nuclear cooperation agreement, opening a new chapter in their strategic partnership and expanding cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The agreement was signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. Along with the civil nuclear cooperation pact, both countries also signed a bilateral safeguards agreement to ensure that nuclear technology is used only for peaceful and civilian purposes. The agreement establishes the legal framework for long-term cooperation in the civil nuclear sector. It is expected to support multi-billion-dollar investments, strengthen commercial ties, and create opportunities for collaboration on future nuclear energy projects. US officials said the partnership will allow American companies to participate in Saudi Arabia’s growing civil nuclear programme. The agreement is also expected to increase exports of US nuclear technology, equipment, and services while creating new employment opportunities and strengthening industrial supply chains in the United States. The two governments said the agreement reflects their shared commitment to expanding economic cooperation while maintaining the highest international standards for nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation. Officials stressed that the partnership is designed to ensure that nuclear technology is used exclusively for peaceful purposes and remains under strict international safeguards. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright described the agreement as an important step toward strengthening relations between Washington and Riyadh. He said the partnership would promote economic growth, improve energy cooperation, and enhance security for both countries and their regional allies. He added that the agreement relies on advanced American nuclear technology and scientific expertise while fully complying with international nuclear safety and non-proliferation requirements. Officials also believe the agreement will strengthen the United States’ position in the global civil nuclear industry by expanding overseas markets for American technology and reinforcing its leadership in peaceful nuclear development. For Saudi Arabia, the agreement supports the country’s long-term energy strategy, which aims to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on oil by developing a civilian nuclear power programme alongside renewable energy projects. The agreement will now be submitted to the US Congress for review before it can enter into force. Following congressional approval, both countries are expected to begin implementing the framework and advance cooperation on future civil nuclear projects.

Trump jokes about ICC as US steps up campaign against the court

US President Donald Trump joked on Friday that he has not become a target of the International Criminal Court, making the remarks as his administration continues a diplomatic campaign against the Hague based institution and encourages member states to withdraw from it. Speaking during a cabinet meeting at the Camp David presidential retreat, Trump interrupted Secretary of State Marco Rubio while he was explaining the administration’s opposition to the court. Trump joked that there was no indication the ICC was pursuing him but added that it “could happen,” prompting laughter from those in attendance. The president then said Rubio was not trying to defend him but was instead supporting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the ICC in 2024. Trump referred to the Israeli leader by his commonly used nickname, Bibi. The comments came as the United States continues to increase pressure on the International Criminal Court. In July, Washington launched a broad diplomatic effort aimed at weakening support for the institution. The campaign includes plans for additional sanctions against the court and calls on member countries to leave the organisation. Relations between the Trump administration and the ICC have remained tense. The United States has already imposed sanctions on several judges linked to the court, accusing it of overstepping its authority and threatening American interests. The International Criminal Court was established in 2002 to investigate and prosecute individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and other serious international offences when national legal systems are unwilling or unable to take action. Rubio repeated the administration’s criticism of the court during Friday’s meeting, describing it as an illegitimate international organisation. He said the United States had previously attempted to encourage reforms but claimed those efforts had failed. According to Rubio, the administration has now shifted its focus to reducing the court’s influence and encouraging more countries to reconsider their membership. He also said that five countries had either withdrawn from the ICC or announced plans to do so, adding that Washington hopes additional nations will follow the same path. Chad and Venezuela have recently declared their intention to leave the court. Neither the United States nor Israel is a member of the ICC. Both countries are not parties to the Rome Statute, the international treaty that created the court. Despite that, the ICC has continued to investigate cases involving several global conflicts, leading to repeated disagreements with governments that reject its jurisdiction. The latest remarks from Trump and Rubio underline the administration’s determination to challenge the authority of the International Criminal Court and strengthen its campaign against an institution it says exceeds its legal mandate.

Relative held after toddler dies in alleged assaul…

Police have arrested a close relative after a one-and-a-half-year-old girl died during treatment following an alleged sexual assault in Karachi’s Qayyumabad area. According to police officials, the incident came to light after an emergency call was received, prompting officers to reach the scene and begin an investigation. Family members told investigators that the suspect, who is a close relative of the child, had taken the toddler outside for a walk. When she was brought home, she was reportedly in critical condition. The child was immediately shifted to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries despite medical efforts to save her. A doctor involved in the case said the initial medical assessment indicated signs consistent with sexual assault. However, authorities said the final cause and nature of the injuries will be determined after the completion of the medico-legal examination and forensic reports. Following the preliminary investigation, police arrested the suspect from his residence in Karachi. The accused remains in custody, and investigators are questioning him as part of the ongoing probe. Law enforcement officials said evidence is being collected and statements from family members and other witnesses are being recorded. Further legal action will depend on the findings of the medical and forensic examinations. The child’s funeral prayers were offered before she was laid to rest at a local cemetery in Karachi. Karachi braces for cloudy, humid weather

Karachi is expected to witness cloudy and humid weather over the next 24 hours, with light drizzle likely in some areas during the morning and evening, according to the latest forecast issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday. The Met Office said daytime temperatures in the port city are expected to remain between 33°C and 35°C, while the minimum temperature recorded early Monday was 28°C. Humidity levels remained high at 78 percent, making weather conditions feel warmer than the actual temperature. Sea breezes continued to blow across the city at a speed of around 15 kilometres per hour, providing some relief from the humid conditions. Weather officials said intermittent drizzle could occur in isolated parts of Karachi, particularly during the early morning and after sunset, although no widespread rainfall is expected. Meanwhile, the PMD has projected that August 2026 is likely to be drier than usual across much of Pakistan, with rainfall expected to remain below the long-term average in most regions. The monthly climate outlook, released on July 31, was prepared using forecasts generated by 10 internationally recognised seasonal climate prediction models, providing a comprehensive assessment of expected weather trends during the month. According to the department, large-scale climate patterns are expected to play a significant role in shaping weather conditions across the country. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently in a positive phase and is likely to continue through August, while the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) has also shifted into a positive phase. Meteorologists say the combination of these climate systems is expected to suppress rainfall in many parts of Pakistan. As a result, below-average rainfall is forecast for most regions of the country. The greatest rainfall deficits are expected over northeastern and central Punjab, extending into adjoining parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, as well as southeastern Sindh. In contrast, parts of Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to receive rainfall closer to normal levels during the month, making it one of the few regions where precipitation is not forecast to decline significantly. The PMD has also warned that temperatures across Pakistan are likely to remain above seasonal averages throughout August. The most pronounced rise in temperatures is expected over eastern Gilgit-Baltistan, central and northeastern Punjab, adjoining areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and northern Balochistan.

Prince William issues urgent climate warning

Prince William has expressed deep concern over the devastating wildfires sweeping across parts of the United Kingdom, France, and Spain, describing the crisis as a powerful reminder of the growing impact of climate change. In a statement shared through the official Instagram Stories account he shares with Princess Catherine on Monday, July 27, the Prince of Wales extended his heartfelt support to everyone affected by the destructive fires while praising the dedication of emergency responders battling the blazes. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating wildfires across France, Spain and the UK,” Prince William wrote. He also acknowledged the extraordinary efforts of firefighters, emergency personnel, and volunteers who have been working around the clock under extremely dangerous and exhausting conditions to protect lives, homes, and natural landscapes. The Prince went on to emphasize that the ongoing wildfire emergency highlights the serious environmental challenges facing countries across Europe. He warned that the increasing frequency and intensity of such disasters reflect the reality of a changing climate, stressing the urgent need to safeguard both communities and the natural world. His message underscored the importance of taking long-term action to address environmental threats while supporting those on the front lines responding to natural disasters. The remarks come as Europe experiences one of its most destructive wildfire seasons in recent history. The fires have spread rapidly across large parts of France and Spain, forcing hundreds of thousands of residents to leave their homes. Reports indicate that approximately 220,000 people have been evacuated from southwestern France, while another 116,000 people have fled affected areas in Spain as authorities continue efforts to contain the flames. The scale of destruction has been enormous. In southwestern France alone, nearly 42,000 hectares of forest have been consumed by fire, making it one of the country’s most severe forest fire disasters since the First World War. Across France, wildfires have scorched almost 98,000 hectares of land this year. Spain has also suffered significant losses, with around 70,000 hectares destroyed as extreme heat, dry conditions, and strong winds continue to fuel the fires. The wildfire crisis has also raised growing concerns in the United Kingdom. Although the country has not experienced fires on the same scale as France or Spain, officials are closely monitoring conditions as prolonged periods of hot and dry weather increase the risk of similar outbreaks. Minister for Intergovernmental Relations Hamish Falconer said the government is actively preparing for the possibility of major wildfires. He noted that fires have already been reported in Scotland and confirmed that the British government remains in close contact with the Scottish government to coordinate support where needed. Falconer described the scenes unfolding around Bordeaux in France and across parts of Spain as deeply alarming, adding that the UK recognizes the need to strengthen its preparedness and emergency response capabilities. Authorities are also taking precautionary measures as Britain prepares for what is expected to be its fourth heatwave of the summer, with emergency services remaining on high alert for any new wildfire outbreaks. As extreme weather events become increasingly common, Prince William’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental protection, climate resilience, and international cooperation in responding to the growing challenges posed by climate change.

Mohsin Naqvi says Shehbaz government will complete…

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has reiterated his confidence that the government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will complete its full five-year constitutional term, while maintaining his earlier criticism that Pakistan’s decades-old governance system requires significant reform. Speaking to the media, Naqvi said his previous remarks about the country’s system had been misunderstood. He clarified that his criticism was directed at what he described as an 80-year-old governance structure rather than the current administration. According to the interior minister, the existing system has failed to deliver the level of progress Pakistan is capable of achieving. Naqvi argued that if the country’s institutional framework had functioned effectively over the years, Pakistan would have been in a much stronger economic and administrative position today. He stressed that his comments should not be interpreted as criticism of the federal government, of which he is a member. Responding to questions about his own performance as interior minister, Naqvi said he is accountable to the prime minister and welcomes an objective assessment of every federal ministry. He suggested that the government publicly release the performance results of all ministries so citizens can evaluate how each department has performed. The interior minister also noted that he regularly attends official duties and said his attendance record stands at approximately 70 percent. He emphasized that transparency and accountability should apply across the federal cabinet. Praising Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Naqvi said the premier works between 14 and 16 hours a day and has continued to pursue reforms despite challenging circumstances. He credited the government with improving tax collection, strengthening Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement, and introducing reforms in several sectors. According to Naqvi, the prime minister could achieve even greater results if Pakistan’s governance system functioned more efficiently. He argued that administrative reforms remain essential for accelerating economic growth and improving public services. Addressing political speculation, Naqvi dismissed suggestions of differences between himself and the prime minister. He said there would always be attempts to create misunderstandings but insisted that their working relationship remains strong. The interior minister concluded by expressing confidence in the stability of the coalition government. He stated that the current administration would complete its constitutional term and that Shehbaz Sharif would continue to serve as prime minister for the full five years, despite criticism from political opponents. Naqvi’s remarks come amid ongoing political debate over governance reforms, economic challenges, and the future direction of Pakistan’s political landscape.
