Pakistan stands firmly with Saudi Arabia: PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s full support for Saudi Arabia during a telephone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The two leaders discussed the regional security situation, recent developments in the Middle East and the importance of maintaining peace and stability.

During the conversation, the prime minister strongly condemned the recent Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. He described the attacks as unacceptable and said they were a clear violation of international law. He added that such actions pose a serious threat to international maritime security, commercial shipping and the free movement of global trade.

Shehbaz Sharif said attacks targeting commercial vessels not only endanger regional stability but also threaten the global economy by disrupting vital shipping routes. He stressed that the international community must work together to ensure the safety of maritime trade and prevent further escalation in the region.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s complete solidarity with Saudi Arabia. He said he, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and the people of Pakistan stand firmly with the Saudi leadership and the brotherly people of the Kingdom during this challenging period. He emphasized that Pakistan fully supports Saudi Arabia’s efforts to safeguard its security and territorial integrity.

Shehbaz Sharif also reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the sovereignty, independence and prosperity of Saudi Arabia. He said the deep-rooted relationship between Islamabad and Riyadh is based on shared faith, mutual respect and decades of close cooperation in political, economic and security matters.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman thanked Pakistan for its consistent support and appreciated the strong brotherly ties between the two countries. He acknowledged Pakistan’s continued commitment to regional peace and stability.

The prime minister conveyed his best wishes to King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and expressed hope for his continued good health and well-being.

Shehbaz Sharif also stressed that Pakistan would continue cooperating with Saudi Arabia and the international community to promote peace, security and stability across the Middle East. He emphasized the importance of ensuring uninterrupted maritime traffic through the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, saying these waterways are critical for global trade, energy supplies and international economic stability.

Hull and Wood provide for home women’s open win

Charley Hull began the week of the final golf major of the year by convincing her caddie Adam Woodward he had won a lottery prize worth £100,000. Unfortunately for Woodward, Hull had bought the ticket in a Blackpool joke shop. The only way he can really hit the jackpot is if his boss breaks her major duck at this week’s AIG Women’s Open. “He was like, ‘I’ve never won one of these things, but today could be my lucky day’,” Hull told BBC Sport. “And he was scratching it, scratching it, scratching it, and then his face dropped. ‘Oh my god,’ he said. ‘I’ve won 100 grand. I’ve won 100 grand.’ He takes his hat off. He takes his glasses off. He’s got sweat dripping down, he’s shaking, he’s so excited.” Hull then broke the bad news. “I think he nearly quit the job then,” the 30-year-old said. “I felt really bad.” The Englishwoman has nine professional wins but is yet to land a major title, and she will be among the leading contenders at the year’s final major. World number one Nelly Korda, who won the US Women’s Open, and Japan’s Yuka Saso are also expected to feature prominently. Another home hope is 22-year-old Lottie Woad, who has been gaining attention after a strong start to her professional career. After her win in Ohio, Woad lost a play-off to Yamashita at the Meijer LPGA Classic, missing a short putt for victory on the final green in Michigan. She says the biggest lesson she has learned is not to be too hard on herself. “Definitely I’ve learned a lot,” said Woad. “Obviously from losing the play-off but having my first lead in a major too. I think it’s quite easy to get frustrated and down yourself. You’re playing every week and obviously all expectations are to try and win and pretty much every week you’re not.” There are similarities between Woad and Hull, who was also 22 when she won this title here. “I watched it on TV and she was always one of the players I looked up to when I was younger,” Woad said. “If I could do what she did here, then I’ll definitely be happy with that.” There is plenty to potentially excite home galleries this week  and should either Woad or Hull emerge with the trophy, those fans will know they have held a ticket of genuine value.

Kyle Richards hopes for Little House cameo return

Kyle Richards is hoping to make a return to the world of Little House on the Prairie, decades after appearing in the beloved original television series. The actress recently revealed that she has already approached the team behind Netflix’s new adaptation about the possibility of making a cameo. Richards opened up about her interest during an interview with Entertainment Weekly published on August 9, sharing that she would be more than happy to revisit the franchise in any capacity. “I would love to make an appearance. Don’t think I didn’t ask them!” Richards said, making it clear that she has already expressed her interest in joining the new series. Richards has a special connection to Little House on the Prairie because she was part of the original show, which aired from 1974 to 1983. She portrayed Alicia Sanderson Edwards, the adopted daughter of Isaiah and Grace Edwards, characters played by Victor French and Bonnie Bartlett. The actress appeared in 19 episodes of the original series, beginning with its second season. Her involvement in the classic show began when she was only five years old, making the experience an important part of her childhood and early acting career. However, Richards explained that the timeline of Netflix’s new adaptation currently makes her original character’s return difficult. According to the actress, producers told her that the new series begins earlier in the story, before Alicia appears in the original narrative. The Netflix adaptation stars Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls and Luke Bracey as Charles Ingalls. Its first season is set on the prairie near Independence, Kansas, and follows the Ingalls family during an earlier period of their journey. By the end of the first season, the family decides to move to Walnut Grove, a location that became central to the original television series. Despite the timeline issue, Richards is not giving up on the idea of appearing in the reboot. She jokingly suggested that she would even be willing to portray a completely different character if that would allow her to make an appearance. “I’m like, ‘Well, whatever. I can do a cameo and play someone else,’” Richards said. The actress added that she genuinely wants to be part of the new version of Little House on the Prairie, showing just how meaningful the franchise remains to her. Watching Netflix’s adaptation has also been an emotional experience for Richards because it has reminded her of her childhood and her time on the original show. She explained that seeing the new actor playing Mr. Edwards brought back memories because the character was once portrayed as her father figure on the series. Warren Christie currently plays Mr. Edwards in Netflix’s version. Richards also reflected on the experience of working on the original production as a young child. She recalled being just five years old when she started and remembered wearing the period costumes. For Richards, watching the new adaptation is therefore more than simply following another television series. It has given her an opportunity to revisit an important chapter of her childhood and career. Whether she ultimately receives a cameo remains unknown, but Richards has made her interest clear: she would love another chance to step into the Little House on the Prairie universe.

French and British coastguards rescue over 150 migrants following engine fire in English Channel

Joint emergency response teams from France and the United Kingdom rescued 157 migrants after their vessel caught fire during an attempted crossing of the English Channel early on Tuesday morning. The vessel, which departed from the northern coast of France near Normandy, was under monitoring by French maritime authorities when its engine caught fire in France’s search-and-rescue zone close to British territorial waters. The blaze caused the boat’s condition to deteriorate rapidly, forcing emergency crews to initiate an immediate extraction operation involving naval helicopters, lifeboats, and medical units from both nations. Prior to the engine fire, French patrol vessels had retrieved five individuals who requested medical aid overnight. Maritime officials noted that passengers making irregular crossings frequently decline preventative assistance from coastal patrols, accepting aid only when confronted with catastrophic emergencies. All rescued individuals were disembarked at the northern French port of Boulogne-sur-Mer for formal health evaluations and processing. Authorities confirmed that no fatalities were recorded during the incident.

KBO cancels games amid heatwave warning

South Korea’s Korea Baseball Organisation (KBO) has cancelled two scheduled league games after authorities issued the highest level of heatwave warning for parts of the country. The decision was taken to protect the health and safety of players, spectators and match officials as temperatures were forecast to reach 39°C. According to the league, the severe heat warning has been in effect since Friday in the cities of Busan and Changwon, where Saturday’s games were due to be played. With dangerously high temperatures expected to continue, the KBO opted to postpone the fixtures rather than risk the well-being of everyone involved. The two affected matches are: • Samsung Lions vs Lotte Giants at Sajik Baseball Stadium in Busan. • KIA Tigers vs NC Dinos at Changwon NC Park in Changwon, South Gyeongsang. Confirming the decision, the KBO said: “Severe heatwave warnings have been in effect for the Changwon and Busan areas since yesterday.” The league further explained the reason behind the postponements, stating: “The decision was made with the safety and health of spectators and players as the top priority.” It also confirmed that both games will be rescheduled at a later date. Under KBO regulations, a heatwave warning may be declared when daily maximum temperatures of at least 35°C are forecast to continue for two consecutive days or longer. Once such conditions exist, the league is permitted to postpone games or introduce other safety measures to minimise the impact of extreme weather. Apart from outright cancellations, the KBO also has the option of delaying outdoor matches by up to one hour. Such decisions are made after consultations between the league’s game operations officials and each club’s game manager. The rule applies to all outdoor stadiums across the league. The only exception is Gocheok Sky Dome in western Seoul. Because it is a fully roofed stadium, games scheduled there can continue without being affected by extreme heat or other weather conditions. The Korea Baseball Organisation has increasingly focused on player and fan welfare in recent years, especially during periods of severe summer weather. South Korea has experienced unusually high temperatures this season, prompting authorities to issue multiple heat-related warnings and advise residents to avoid prolonged outdoor activities whenever possible. Founded in 1982, the KBO League is South Korea’s premier professional baseball competition and consists of 10 teams owned by major corporate groups. It remains the country’s most popular spectator sport, featuring a 144-game regular season that attracts millions of fans every year. Among its most successful clubs are the KIA Tigers, who have captured 12 championships, the highest total in league history. Despite the disruption caused by the heatwave, league officials have assured fans that the postponed fixtures will be added to the schedule later in the season, with safety continuing to remain the KBO’s highest priority as extreme weather conditions persist across parts of South Korea.
