Cone rues absence of ‘best players’ as Gilas suffers worst Asian Games finish

MANILA, Philippines – Tim Cone lamented the circumstances that prevented Gilas Pilipinas from forming a more formidable team as it crashed to its worst finish in Asian Games history.

Seeking to defend the gold medal it won in 2023, the Philippines instead ended up failing to reach the quarterfinals after a 105-61 drubbing from China in its final group stage game in Nagoya, Japan, on Monday, September 14.

The all-PBA squad finished with a 1-2 record in Group C, missing out on the quarterfinals as one of the two best third-place teams due to its inferior -17 point differential, behind Group B’s Jordan (-5) and Group A’s Saudi Arabia (-11).

Unable to make the last eight, the Nationals suffered a worse finish than its seventh-place showing in the 2014 edition.

“Deeply disappointed we couldn’t get to the quarters. But it’s a reminder for us that if we don’t or can’t bring our best players to these international events, we won’t excel,” Cone said through a message exchange.

“We brought some really good players, but we didn’t bring our best players.”

Gilas Pilipinas missed the services of Japan B. League standouts Kai Sotto, Dwight Ramos, AJ Edu, Quentin Millora-Brown, and Mike Phillips, and Korean Basketball League stalwarts Kevin Quiambao and Carl Tamayo — all of whom are key players in FIBA competitions.

Since the Asian Games is not a part of the FIBA calendar, clubs in Japan and Korea are not required to release their players.

The Nationals also played without a naturalized player, with Justin Brownlee and Bennie Boatwright unable to make the cut.

Brownlee has yet to fully recover from injuries that kept him out of national team action for the past two months, while Boatwright failed to make it in time for the Asian Games as his naturalization only lapsed into law earlier this September.

PBA stars who represent the country in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers were also not around, with the likes of Scottie Thompson, CJ Perez, Juan Gomez de Liaño, Chris Newsome, and Troy Rosario not part of the Asian Games crew.

June Mar Fajardo, meanwhile, already retired from the national team after the fourth window of the Asian Qualifiers in August.

“It would have been nice to have Kai and AJ and Q and Mike Philips and Dwight and KQ and Carl and the like, but they weren’t permitted from their mother teams,” said Cone.

“We would have liked Justin and Bennie — or even Jordan Clarkson — but none were available, and it’s not easy an easy process to naturalize players like it is in other countries. Even June Mar would have made an impact.”

Cone, though, tipped his hat to the players who chose to don the national colors with Gilas Pilipinas’ main guys unable to see action.

A last-minute inclusion, Calvin Oftana showed the way for the 12-man crew, which also included Robert Bolick, Sedrick Barefield, RJ Abarrientos, Zavier Lucero, Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, Adrian Nocum, Don Trollano, Justine Baltazar, Justin Arana, Jerrick Ahanmisi, and Brandon Bates.

“The guys we had played their hearts out. We were just oversized by the other teams. But they were a great group of guys who loved playing for their country,” said Cone.

“It wasn’t their fault that we couldn’t add size to their roster to help them out. They gave their all.” – Rappler.com

FIFA pushes ahead with controversial commercial investment plan despite opposition from UEFA and Concacaf

FIFA has insisted that “nobody is selling football” whilst reaffirming its intention to proceed with a plan to sell minority stakes in its commercial operations to private investors, despite a fierce backlash from major regional governing bodies. UEFA voted to boycott future World Cups if the initiative moves forward, whilst Concacaf confirmed its 41 member associations also rejected the proposal put forward by FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Under the proposal, FIFA intends to establish a new commercial subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to manage the commercial rights of major tournaments including the men’s World Cup. Private equity firm Thrive Eternal, founded by venture capitalist Joshua Kushner, is expected to lead the investor group purchasing a minority stake in the new entity, which carries an initial valuation of $20 billion. To secure the necessary 106 votes from FIFA’s 211 member associations, Infantino has offered an immediate $20 million payout to federations that back the proposal before a 19 September deadline. FIFA maintains the initiative will significantly increase development funding for smaller footballing nations without compromising the sport’s governance.

Harvey Barnes signs long-term contract extension a…

Harvey Barnes has committed his future to Newcastle United after signing a new “long-term” contract with the Premier League club on Monday, fending off interest from Aston Villa . Barnes had two years remaining on his previous deal, but Newcastle convinced the England international to extend his stay at St James’ Park ahead of the new season . The 28-year-old winger had been linked with a move to Aston Villa, who are seeking new forwards after selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea . “It feels great to sign this new contract so early before the new season starts. It’s been an amazing journey so far and I’m delighted to continue that,” Barnes said . “When I first joined the club I quickly learned what a special place it is, but after three years here I know that even more. I love everything about it the city, the stadium, the people  and I’m really happy extending my time here.” Barnes, who joined Newcastle from Leicester in 2023, enjoyed a fine campaign last season with 16 goals in 57 appearances across all competitions . He has now scored 30 goals in 120 career appearances for the Magpies . The winger’s decision is a major boost for manager Eddie Howe, particularly after Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali’s switch to Tottenham earlier in the close-season . Newcastle are also hoping to keep captain Bruno Guimaraes amid Arsenal’s interest in the Brazilian midfielder . Howe saluted Barnes’s consistency over his three years on Tyneside . “Harvey’s new contract is very well deserved and a reflection of the work he’s put in and the quality he’s shown throughout his three years at Newcastle United,” Howe said . “Harvey is a player who has consistently produced special moments at vital times for the team. Harvey has vast experience at the highest level but we believe there is still more to come.” The extension signals Newcastle’s determination to retain their core players as they prepare for another campaign competing on multiple fronts, including European football .

Tim Seifert’s 72 powers Manchester to maiden Hundred title

LONDON: New Zealand batter Tim Seifert produced a sensational display of power hitting as Manchester Super Giants chased down 159 against Trent Rockets to win their maiden men’s Hundred title by five wickets at Lord’s on Sunday. Seifert’s explosive 72 off just 38 balls transformed the chase and put Manchester in control before Liam Dawson held his nerve during a dramatic final over to complete a memorable victory. The Super Giants appeared to be cruising before the Rockets launched a late fightback. With Manchester needing only three runs from the final nine balls, Mohammad Amir struck twice in successive deliveries, removing Heinrich Klaasen and Michael Bracewell. Ben Sanderson then delivered two consecutive dot balls, leaving Manchester needing three runs from three deliveries. Dawson responded in emphatic fashion. The experienced batter launched the next delivery over the mid-wicket boundary for six, sealing victory with two balls still remaining and sparking celebrations among the Manchester camp. Earlier, Seifert had almost single-handedly shifted the momentum of the final. The right-hander attacked the Rockets’ bowling from the outset, smashing seven sixes and four fours in a breathtaking innings. The Rockets briefly thought they had removed the danger man when Seifert was on 33. Finn Allen produced a spectacular effort near the boundary, but the catch was ruled out after Allen’s foot touched the rope before he completed the attempt. Seifert continued his assault and eventually equalled Will Jacks’ record for the highest individual score in a men’s Hundred final. His performance capped an outstanding tournament. Seifert finished as the competition’s second-highest run-scorer, behind Australia’s Mitchell Marsh, accumulating 394 runs at an average just below 50. For Manchester Super Giants, the triumph ended years of frustration. The Old Trafford-based franchise, previously known as Manchester Originals, had reached two men’s finals before Sunday but failed to lift the trophy, including a defeat by Trent Rockets in 2022. The Rockets, meanwhile, were left to rue a missed opportunity after topping the men’s table and earning a direct place in the final. They had also hoped to make history by becoming the first franchise to win both the men’s and women’s Hundred titles in the same season. Instead, it was Manchester’s night at Lord’s, with Seifert’s extraordinary hitting and Dawson’s cool finish delivering the franchise its long-awaited first men’s Hundred crown.

  • Justin Greaves’ Five-wicket haul bowls Pakistan out for 282

Justin Greaves produced a career-best bowling performance, claiming a five-wicket haul as West Indies bowled out Pakistan for 282 on day three of the first Test at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, securing a 29-run first-innings lead . Resuming from an overnight total of 199-3, Pakistan captain Shan Masood and Salman Ali Agha added 45 runs for the fourth wicket . Masood, who started the day unbeaten on 88, brought up his century in the 56th over with a single, anchoring the innings with a composed knock . Agha, however, looked uncomfortable at the crease after testing opening overs from Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales . Pakistan appeared well placed at 244-3 before the hosts triggered a dramatic collapse, with the visitors losing six wickets for just 15 runs in the space of seven overs . Greaves proved to be the chief tormentor, taking four wickets in four overs without conceding a single run in a devastating spell . Shamar Joseph started the collapse by castling Agha with a beautiful delivery that pitched on length and squared up the right-hander, dismissing him for 20 . In the next over, Greaves got the better of the well-set Masood, who played down the wrong line and inside-edged onto his stumps . The southpaw departed for 109 off 184 balls, including 12 fours . From there, Greaves took over completely. He bowled Aamer Jamal for three before trapping debutant Ali Usman Ibw for a duck, reducing Pakistan to 256-7 . With the tail exposed, Mohammad Rizwan was expected to reduce the deficit, but he chased a wide delivery outside off stump, with Shai Hope completing the catch behind the stumps . Rizwan departed for just 12 . After lunch, Greaves continued his dominance, accounting for Mohammad Abbas (0) to complete his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket . Mohammad Ali and Khurram Shahzad added 15 runs for the last wicket before Roach wrapped up the innings, dismissing Shahzad for 19 . Pakistan folded for 282 in 80.1 overs . West Indies now hold a slender but significant 29-run advantage heading into their second innings, with the pitch continuing to offer assistance to the seamers .
