Carlo Paalam saves PH’s boxing campaign in Asian Games, earns sure medal

MANILA, Philippines – Carlo Paalam prevented what would have been a dubious first for Philippine boxing in the Asian Games.

Paalam assured himself of a medal after earning his place in the semifinals of the men’s 55kg division with a 3-2 win over China’s Zhang Jiamao at the Nishio Gymnasium in Japan on Monday, September 28.

The Olympic silver medalist won by scores of 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 28-29, 27-30 as he preserved the Philippines’ medal streak in Asian Games boxing.

A loss by Paalam would have marked the first time the Philippines failed to win a boxing medal in the Asian Games since the sport made its debut in the 1954 edition as fellow Olympic silver medalist Nesthy Petecio earlier crashed out in the quarterfinals.

But Paalam rose to the occasion, earning the nod of three of the five judges in the opening round before delivering a more convincing second-round showing that practically sealed his victory.

Even as Zhang unanimously won the third round, he failed to erase the lead Paalam built.

With the victory, Paalam has matched his bronze finish in the 2018 edition in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he competed in the men’s 49kg category.

It does not get easier, though, for the pride of Cagayan de Oro City as he battles reigning world champion Makhmud Sabyrkhan of Kazakhstan in the semifinals on Wednesday, September 30.

Earlier on Monday, Petecio fell short of a breakthrough Asian Games medal as she suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of China’s Yang Chengyu in the women’s 60kg class.

Yang controlled the bout from start to finish, earning 30-26 scores from all five judges.

Other Filipino boxers have also bowed out of contention, with Junmilardo Ogayre (men’s 60kg) losing in the quarterfinals, Riza Pasuit (women’s 54kg) and Norlan Petecio (men’s 70kg) exiting the round of 16, and Aira Villegas (women’s 51kg) getting the boot in the round of 32.

Eumir Marcial, a silver medalist in the 2023 edition, was supposed to see action in this Asian Games but sat out after a mutual decision with the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines. – Rappler.com

AB de Villiers says Pakistan bowling attack has lo…

Former South African batter AB de Villiers believes Pakistan’s bowling attack has lost the fear factor that once made the country’s fast bowlers among the most intimidating forces in international cricket. Speaking on his YouTube channel, de Villiers reflected on Pakistan’s rich history of producing world-class fast bowlers and said the current attack has yet to consistently demonstrate the same level of dominance. The former South African star recalled watching legendary Pakistani pacers including Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis and Mohammad Asif, describing them as exceptional bowlers who could create fear and uncertainty among opposing batters. According to de Villiers, Pakistan’s current pace attack has not consistently produced the same impact. He specifically mentioned Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, saying they still have the reputation and potential associated with great Pakistani bowlers but need to show greater consistency to match those expectations. He suggested that this issue has contributed to questions surrounding the effectiveness of the current bowling unit. The former batter further described the last three years as a difficult period for Pakistan cricket. He pointed to disappointing results, including a defeat against the West Indies, as evidence of the challenges facing the national side. However, de Villiers acknowledged that Pakistan is currently going through a rebuilding phase. He believes the upcoming performances of the country’s fast bowlers will be important in determining whether the team can restore its traditional reputation. The former South African international will be particularly interested in Pakistan’s fast-bowling performance against England. According to him, the series could provide an opportunity for Pakistan’s pacers to demonstrate whether they can bring back the aggression, pace and intimidation that once defined the country’s bowling attack. Pakistan has historically been synonymous with quality fast bowling, producing several generations of elite pacers. The challenge for the current generation is not simply to produce individual moments of brilliance but to deliver consistently across formats. De Villiers’ comments have therefore sparked a wider discussion about the state of Pakistan’s bowling attack and whether its current stars can revive the fear factor that once made Pakistan one of the most respected fast-bowling nations in world cricket.

Salman Ali Agha breaks silence after Pakistan’s England defeat

LEEDS: Pakistan’s stand-in captain Salman Ali Agha has admitted that England exposed weaknesses across the board after Pakistan suffered a heavy defeat in the opening Test, while expressing hope that Babar Azam will return for the next match. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Salman acknowledged that Pakistan were outplayed by England and failed to maintain the consistency required at international level. “England outclassed us in every department,” Salman said, adding that the team repeatedly failed to execute its plans when it mattered most. The defeat has raised fresh questions about Pakistan’s preparations for the challenging England conditions. Salman said the team had arrived only about a week before the start of the series, leaving limited time for players to adjust to the unfamiliar conditions. “We always face tough challenges in England,” he said, stressing that adapting to local conditions requires time and experience. Pakistan’s problems were particularly visible with the bat. After being dismissed for 171 in their first innings, the visitors managed only 135 in the second, allowing England to complete a comprehensive innings victory. Salman also admitted that several senior players are struggling for form. He pointed to his own performance, as well as those of Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel, saying the lack of runs from key batters has become a major concern for the side. The captain nevertheless insisted that Pakistan have enough talent to improve. “We are going through a difficult rebuilding phase,” Salman said, describing the current team as a side being prepared with an eye on the future. He acknowledged that Pakistan’s bowling attack is relatively young and inexperienced but argued that the experience gained during difficult overseas tours could prove valuable in the long term. The captain’s comments come as Pakistan attempt to recover from a disappointing start to their three-Test series against England. The visitors will need a significant improvement in both batting and execution if they are to challenge the hosts in the remaining matches. One potential boost could come from the return of Babar Azam. Salman expressed hope that the former Pakistan captain would be fully fit and available for the next Test. Babar’s return could provide Pakistan with much-needed experience and stability in the batting order at a crucial stage of the series. Pakistan’s recent struggles have highlighted the difficulty of competing overseas, particularly when a team is undergoing transition. For Salman, however, the priority is clear: Pakistan must learn quickly and raise their standards. The stand-in captain stressed that the current level of performance is not acceptable and urged the team to improve its execution in foreign conditions. With two Tests still remaining, Pakistan have an opportunity to respond on the field. But after a one-sided opening defeat, the pressure will be firmly on the visitors to show that their rebuilding project can deliver results as well as promise.

Jaffna Kings outclass Kandy Royals by 21 runs in LPL 2026

Shakib Al Hasan delivered an outstanding all-round performance to guide Jaffna Kings to a 21-run victory over Kandy Royals in the 18th match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Thursday. Defending a formidable target of 222, Jaffna Kings dismissed Kandy Royals for 200 on the final delivery of the innings to secure an important win. The Royals made a flying start to their chase, with openers Pawan Sandesh and Lahiru Igalagamage putting immediate pressure on the bowling attack. The pair raced to a 40-run partnership within the first three overs, setting the tone for an aggressive pursuit of the target. Sandesh played an entertaining knock of 48, while Igalagamage contributed 15 before the opening stand was broken. Kandy Royals maintained a healthy scoring rate during the first half of the innings, keeping themselves in contention. However, the momentum shifted dramatically once the spin duo of Shakib Al Hasan and Dunith Wellalage came into the attack. The experienced bowlers tightened the scoring and struck at crucial intervals, reducing the Royals to 112-4 and putting Jaffna firmly back in control. Captain Wanindu Hasaranga attempted to revive the chase with a quickfire 24 off just 12 deliveries, smashing three sixes in an attacking cameo. His aggressive innings briefly raised hopes of a late comeback, but Shakib dismissed the Royals skipper in the 18th over, effectively ending the contest. Shakib and Wellalage claimed three wickets each to lead the bowling effort, while Dilshan Madushanka and Zahoor Khan chipped in with two wickets apiece to complete the victory. Earlier, Jaffna Kings produced an explosive batting display after being asked to bat first, finishing with an imposing total of 221-6 in their allotted 20 overs. Openers Kamil Mishara and Avishka Fernando laid the perfect platform with a blistering 95-run partnership inside the opening seven overs. Mishara narrowly missed out on a half-century, scoring 49 with the help of five sixes and two boundaries. Fernando added 36 from 22 balls, striking three fours and a six before leaving the field as a substitute. Although the Royals managed to regain some control through a series of quick wickets, reducing Jaffna to 139-5 in the 15th over, the innings received a powerful finish from Shakib Al Hasan and Chamindu Wickramasinghe. The pair added 59 runs in just 23 deliveries, lifting the Kings beyond the 220-run mark. Wickramasinghe played a breathtaking innings of 43 from only 15 balls, hammering four sixes and three boundaries. Shakib remained composed at the other end, contributing 22 runs from 16 deliveries, including one six and one four. For Kandy Royals, Moeen Ali and Wanindu Hasaranga were the standout bowlers, taking two wickets each. Pakistan left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, however, endured a difficult outing, finishing wicketless after conceding 43 runs in his three overs. The comprehensive victory strengthened Jaffna Kings’ campaign, with Shakib Al Hasan making a decisive impact with both bat and ball in a memorable all-round performance.

Shakib’s home attacked after Hasina media event

Former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan’s ancestral home was attacked by a group of people after he participated in the first public media event of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since her removal from power in 2024. According to police, the attack took place in Magura, around 170 kilometres southwest of Dhaka. Protesters reportedly smashed windows of the house and threw bricks along with two petrol bombs. The attack triggered a fire on the upper floor of the residence. Authorities said the property was vacant at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported. Police have launched an investigation into the attack. The incident occurred hours after Shakib joined a virtual discussion organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi. During the event, Sheikh Hasina addressed the media for the first time since leaving office and declared that she intended to return to Bangladesh in December despite the legal cases against her. Hasina said she was prepared to face imprisonment or even death if she returned, insisting that she wanted to stand with the people of Bangladesh. She also called for the ban on her Awami League party to be lifted so it could resume political activities. Shakib, who was elected to parliament on an Awami League ticket in January 2024, has remained outside Bangladesh since the student-led uprising that forced Hasina from power. He is currently facing several investigations, including allegations related to murder, financial misconduct, fraud and money laundering, all of which remain under legal process. The Bangladesh government strongly criticised Hasina’s media appearance from India, describing it as harmful to the country’s sovereignty. Officials warned that allowing such activities could negatively affect relations between Dhaka and New Delhi. Hasina has been living in India since August 2024 after leaving Bangladesh during the political unrest. The Bangladeshi government has requested her extradition, while Indian authorities have said the request is being reviewed under legal procedures. Last year, Bangladesh’s war crimes tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in absentia over charges linked to the deadly crackdown on the 2024 student protests. The former prime minister has rejected the charges, calling them politically motivated.
