AB de Villiers says Pakistan bowling attack has lo…

Former South African batter AB de Villiers believes Pakistan’s bowling attack has lost the fear factor that once made the country’s fast bowlers among the most intimidating forces in international cricket.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, de Villiers reflected on Pakistan’s rich history of producing world-class fast bowlers and said the current attack has yet to consistently demonstrate the same level of dominance.

The former South African star recalled watching legendary Pakistani pacers including Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis and Mohammad Asif, describing them as exceptional bowlers who could create fear and uncertainty among opposing batters.

According to de Villiers, Pakistan’s current pace attack has not consistently produced the same impact. He specifically mentioned Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, saying they still have the reputation and potential associated with great Pakistani bowlers but need to show greater consistency to match those expectations. He suggested that this issue has contributed to questions surrounding the effectiveness of the current bowling unit.

The former batter further described the last three years as a difficult period for Pakistan cricket. He pointed to disappointing results, including a defeat against the West Indies, as evidence of the challenges facing the national side.

However, de Villiers acknowledged that Pakistan is currently going through a rebuilding phase. He believes the upcoming performances of the country’s fast bowlers will be important in determining whether the team can restore its traditional reputation.

The former South African international will be particularly interested in Pakistan’s fast-bowling performance against England. According to him, the series could provide an opportunity for Pakistan’s pacers to demonstrate whether they can bring back the aggression, pace and intimidation that once defined the country’s bowling attack.

Pakistan has historically been synonymous with quality fast bowling, producing several generations of elite pacers. The challenge for the current generation is not simply to produce individual moments of brilliance but to deliver consistently across formats.

De Villiers’ comments have therefore sparked a wider discussion about the state of Pakistan’s bowling attack and whether its current stars can revive the fear factor that once made Pakistan one of the most respected fast-bowling nations in world cricket.

The special artwork appeared on Google’s Pakistan homepage on Friday, August 14, adding a digital touch to celebrations taking place across the country and among Pakistani communities around the world. Instead of the company’s usual multicoloured “Google” logo, users visiting the search engine in Pakistan were greeted with a design reflecting the green and white colours of the national flag. The simple but eye-catching tribute has brought Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations to one of the world’s most visited digital platforms, allowing millions of users to see the national-day themed artwork while using Google’s search service. These temporary artworks replace or transform the company’s standard logo and often incorporate symbols associated with the occasion being commemorated. For Pakistan’s Independence Day this year, Google has continued that tradition with a design centred on the country’s national identity. From Islamabad and Lahore to Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta, streets, homes and public buildings have been decorated with the green and white colours of Pakistan. The digital tribute also gives the country’s large overseas community another reason to celebrate, with Pakistanis living in different parts of the world marking the occasion through social media, community events and family gatherings. Not Google’s first Pakistan tribute Google’s recognition of Pakistan’s Independence Day is not a new tradition. Over the years, the technology giant has marked Pakistan-related occasions with Doodles featuring elements of the country’s history, culture, architecture, art and natural heritage. Past designs have highlighted national symbols, historic landmarks and distinctive aspects of Pakistani identity, bringing them to a global online audience. The Doodles have become more than simple changes to a search-page logo. For many users, they offer a brief visual reminder of an important national occasion while connecting local celebrations with the wider digital world. As the country marks 79 years of independence, Google’s colourful tribute has added a modern, global dimension to a day rooted in Pakistan’s history, identity and national pride.

Punjab imposes 60-day ban on swimming in water bod…

The Punjab government has imposed a 60-day ban on swimming in dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes across the province. The restriction has been introduced under Section 144 of the law. The Punjab Home Department issued a notification announcing the ban. According to the notification, people will also be prohibited from bathing in rainwater accumulated on streets, roads and open areas. The government has also restricted boating without official permission in the province. The ban applies to the water bodies covered under the notification. Officials said the restrictions were imposed to protect human lives during the ongoing monsoon season. Water levels have increased in several dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes across Punjab. Heavy rainfall has also created pools of standing water in different areas. Authorities fear that entering these waters could increase the risk of drowning and other accidents. The government has therefore moved to prevent people from swimming or bathing in potentially dangerous locations. The Home Department said the restrictions would remain in place for 60 days. Citizens have been advised to cooperate with the authorities and avoid entering rivers, canals, dams and other water bodies. The ban comes as Punjab continues to experience monsoon rains. Several parts of the province have already faced heavy rainfall, flooding and rising water levels. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas where water levels are rising. People have also been advised to follow official warnings and avoid unnecessary activities near flooded areas.

PRL and SSGC face Senate anger over missing inform…

Islamabad: State owned petroleum companies Pakistan Refinery Limited (PRL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) faced serious criticism in the Senate after lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction over missing information, failure to follow committee directions and concerns about company management. The Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum questioned the performance and accountability of government owned petroleum companies and considered taking strict action against officials who failed to cooperate with parliamentary oversight. During the meeting chaired by Senator Umer Farooq, the committee reviewed the appointment criteria for chairpersons and managing directors of petroleum companies, the structure of their boards and progress on previous committee recommendations. The committee took serious notice of the absence of the Managing Director of Pakistan Refinery Limited during the meeting. Members expressed concern that PRL, despite being a state-owned company, did not provide the required information to the committee. The committee considered initiating a privilege motion against the Managing Director of PRL for failing to appear and provide necessary details. The Petroleum Division was directed to submit complete information about the boards of directors and senior management of all government owned petroleum companies. The committee said transparency in leadership appointments and company management is necessary because these organisations deal with matters directly linked to the national economy and public interest. The committee also expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of Sui Southern Gas Company and its failure to implement previous recommendations. Members said SSGC had not provided details of its board of directors despite earlier instructions. The committee also raised concerns over remarks made by SSGC that were considered discouraging toward the Senate Standing Committee’s role in discussing important matters. The committee considered moving a privilege motion against SSGC over non compliance with its directions. The Petroleum Division was further directed to review the tenure of board members who have remained in positions beyond the approved period and submit a detailed report. The committee also raised concerns over the absence of performance audits of oil rigs. Authorities were directed to provide the required audit report within seven days so that the committee could review the performance and efficiency of petroleum sector operations. Members said proper audits are necessary to identify problems, improve production and ensure better use of national resources. The committee also reviewed issues related to LPG quotas and licensing. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority was directed to hold consultations with all relevant stakeholders and submit a detailed report to the committee. Senators stressed that petroleum companies must improve governance, follow parliamentary instructions and ensure public institutions operate with transparency. The committee said accountability in state owned petroleum companies is essential to protect national interests and improve confidence in the energy sector.

FIFA World Cup visitors in Canada file 175 Asylum …

Around 175 foreign nationals who traveled to Canada to attend FIFA World Cup matches have filed applications for political asylum, according to immigration authorities. Canada hosted several FIFA World Cup matches in the cities of Toronto and Vancouver, for which the country issued thousands of temporary visas to international visitors. Many fans from different countries applied for tourist visas to watch the tournament, although a significant number of applications were rejected. After arriving in Canada, 175 visitors submitted asylum claims that will now be reviewed under the country’s refugee protection laws. Immigration officials have not disclosed how many of those seeking asylum were athletes or members of sports delegations. According to available information, 25 individuals from Ghana have filed asylum applications, while 15 applicants each from Egypt and Colombia have also requested protection in Canada. Officials have indicated that the number of applications could increase further. Canadian authorities had previously warned foreign visitors that obtaining a visa for FIFA World Cup travel does not provide a pathway to remain in the country beyond the permitted period or automatically qualify them for asylum. The asylum claims will undergo a legal assessment, during which Canadian immigration authorities will determine whether applicants meet the requirements for refugee protection under the country’s immigration system. The development has drawn attention as Canada continues to manage increased international travel and immigration applications linked to major global events.

NYC Mayor urges US to enforce ICC arrest warrant a…

NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said the city does not have the legal authority to enforce the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while urging the US federal government to take action if Netanyahu visits the United States. In a video statement posted on social media, Mamdani said his administration had carefully reviewed whether New York City could execute the ICC warrant under existing laws. After examining all available legal options, he concluded that municipal authorities lack the power to carry out such an arrest. “The federal government, however, does,” Mamdani said, calling on US officials to cooperate with the ICC and enforce the warrant if the opportunity arises. The New York mayor also sharply criticized Netanyahu, describing him as “a war criminal” and accusing him of being responsible for what he called “a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people.” Mamdani added that he supports the ICC’s position, saying that anyone charged by the court should face legal proceedings regardless of their office or nationality. “I agree with the ICC that Benjamin Netanyahu should be arrested and tried for his crimes,” he said. The ICC, based in The Hague, announced in 2024 that it had found reasonable grounds to believe Netanyahu bore responsibility for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 cross-border attack on Israel. The remarks come just a day after US President Donald Trump declared that Netanyahu would not face arrest if he attends the United Nations General Assembly in New York this September. Trump’s comments highlighted the gap between the US administration’s position and the ICC’s legal proceedings. Netanyahu’s office swiftly rejected Mamdani’s remarks, dismissing the ICC as a “kangaroo court” and reiterating Israel’s long-standing position that the tribunal lacks jurisdiction over Israeli officials. The issue has reignited debate over the role of international justice, the authority of the ICC and the legal obligations of countries when individuals facing international arrest warrants travel abroad. While the United States is not a member of the ICC and does not formally recognise its jurisdiction, the controversy has drawn renewed international attention as legal, diplomatic and political questions continue to surround Netanyahu’s potential foreign visits. The latest exchange underscores the deep divisions over the Gaza conflict and the growing debate about accountability, international law and the limits of local and federal authority in the United States.
