Kayla Sanchez denied Asian Games medal anew, takes 4th in 50m freestyle

MANILA, Philippines – An Asian Games medal remained elusive for Kayla Sanchez.

Sanchez once again fell short of a podium finish as she placed fourth in the women’s 50m freestyle final at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in Japan on Thursday, September 24.

Logging 24.75 seconds, Sanchez narrowly missed the bronze medal by a 0.29 seconds, with China’s Cheng Yujie beating the Filipina for it with a time of 24.46 seconds.

China completed a 1-3 finish as Wu Qingfeng struck gold with a new Asian Games record of 23.98 seconds, preventing Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey from capturing a third freestyle title in this edition of the continental showpiece.

Haughey, who ruled the 100m and 200m events, settled for silver with 24.32 seconds.

The result denied Sanchez from becoming the first Filipino to win a swimming medal in the Asian Games since Raymond Papa bagged bronzes in the men’s 100m and 200m backstroke in the 1998 edition in Thailand.

It was a disappointing outcome for the Filipina-Canadian, considering that she skipped the women’s 100m backstroke on Wednesday, September 23, to preserve her energy for the 50m freestyle.

Sanchez also came oh so close to a medal in the women’s 100m freestyle, where she ended up fourth as well on Tuesday, September 22.

An Olympic silver and bronze medalist back when she still represented Canada, Sanchez led the Philippines’ campaign in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, where she emerged as the most bemedalled Filipino athlete with three golds and five silvers. – Rappler.com

According to reliable sources, the federation is currently in discussions with an experienced European coach who is expected to take charge of the women’s team in the near future. Sources within the PHF revealed that negotiations with the European coach are progressing positively, and all major matters are likely to be finalized by the end of the current month. The appointment is seen as an important step toward enhancing the technical skills, tactical awareness, and overall competitiveness of Pakistan’s women hockey players on the international stage. The decision to hire a foreign coach reflects the federation’s commitment to investing in high-quality coaching and modern training methods. European coaches are widely recognized for their expertise, advanced coaching techniques, and successful experience in developing competitive hockey teams. The PHF believes that bringing in international expertise will provide Pakistani players with valuable exposure to global standards of the sport. In addition to coaching the national team, the new European coach is expected to oversee training camps and organize international tours for the Pakistan women’s hockey team. According to sources, the players will participate in training and competition tours across Europe, where they will have the opportunity to play practice matches against local clubs and national-level teams. These matches are intended to improve the players’ match fitness, technical abilities, and confidence while exposing them to different styles of play. The foreign coach will also be responsible for planning and arranging these international fixtures as part of the team’s long-term development program. Regular international competition is considered essential for improving the team’s ranking and preparing players for major regional and global tournaments. The initiative comes at a time when Pakistan is looking to revive its hockey legacy and promote greater participation of women in the sport. Women’s hockey in Pakistan has shown potential over the years, but it has faced challenges such as limited international exposure, inadequate training opportunities, and a lack of consistent professional coaching. The appointment of an experienced European coach is expected to address some of these issues and create a more structured pathway for the development of female hockey players. Sports experts believe that exposure to international coaching standards and overseas competitions can significantly enhance the performance of Pakistani athletes. By learning from experienced professionals and competing against stronger opponents, players will gain the confidence and skills required to perform at higher levels. If the negotiations are successfully concluded by the end of the month, the Pakistan Hockey Federation is expected to officially announce the appointment soon afterward. The move is being viewed as a positive step toward strengthening the women’s national hockey program and building a more competitive team capable of achieving better results in future international tournaments.

  • 525-Foot Foosball table sets World record

A unique football themed event in New York City celebrated the FIFA World Cup by setting a new Guinness World Record for the world’s longest foosball table. The record was created by Teremana Tequila which built a giant foosball table measuring 525 feet in length. The table was about the same size as 112 standard foosball tables placed end to end. The massive table was installed on a street in Brooklyn on July 11, where dozens of players took part in games at the same time. Its impressive size stretched beyond a full city block attracting large crowds and plenty of attention. Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric attended the event and officially confirmed the achievement after checking all measurements and record requirements. Empric said the event was a success despite the hot weather.  He added that the giant foosball table was an amazing sight and looked even longer than an entire city block. The new record broke the previous world record set in Turkey in 2023 where the longest foosball table measured 497 feet 8.4 inches. Instead of throwing the table away after the event organizers announced they would cut it into several standard sized foosball tables. These tables will be donated to community and recreation centers across the United States giving children and young people more opportunities to enjoy the game. The record setting event not only celebrated football but also showed how sports can bring people together while supporting local communities.
