KARACHI: The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Karachi has arrested a key suspected member of a militant network during an intelligence-based operation, officials said on Thursday.

According to a CTD spokesperson, Syed Mehdi Nabvi Abidi, who was listed among the top 10 most-wanted suspects on the MQM-L death squad list, was taken into custody over alleged involvement in planning terrorist activities in Karachi and other parts of the country.

Officials said the suspect was wanted in several terrorism-related cases registered in Karachi. During preliminary interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that following the arrest of two of his associates, he and other members of the network had planned attacks in Karachi and other cities.

The CTD said the suspect had been nominated in multiple cases dating back to 2004 and 2005, including cases involving the killings of religious scholars and the alleged possession of explosives and other prohibited material.

A hand grenade and a loudspeaker were reportedly recovered from his possession during the operation.

Following the arrest, CTD Karachi registered two new cases against the suspect. One was registered under the Explosive Substances Act, 1908, read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, while the second was registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The department said further interrogation of the suspect is underway. Special teams have also been formed to trace and arrest other alleged facilitators and members of the network based on information obtained during the investigation.

The CTD maintained that operations against the network would continue as investigators work to establish the full extent of the suspect’s alleged activities and connections.

According to an official notice issued under Section 160 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), Syed Imran Shafqat has been asked to appear before investigators as part of Enquiry No. ENQ-CCRC-MTN-1549/26, registered on July 24, 2026. The notice states that the inquiry concerns allegations that the individual shared false, fabricated, malicious, and baseless content targeting government institutions and public dignitaries through social media platforms. Investigators have instructed him to present himself at the NCCIA Cyber Crime Reporting Centre in Multan along with his original Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) to record his statement. The agency warned that failure to appear could result in the inquiry proceeding on the basis that no defence or explanation was offered by the recipient of the notice. The notice was issued by Sub-Inspector Tahir Mehmood of the NCCIA Cyber Crime Reporting Centre, Multan, as part of the agency’s ongoing investigations into alleged cybercrime-related offences. It is important to note that the issuance of a notice for appearance forms part of an inquiry process and does not, by itself, establish guilt or liability.

She also called for the ban on her Awami League party to be lifted so it could resume political activities. Shakib, who was elected to parliament on an Awami League ticket in January 2024, has remained outside Bangladesh since the student-led uprising that forced Hasina from power. He is currently facing several investigations, including allegations related to murder, financial misconduct, fraud and money laundering, all of which remain under legal process.     Houthis deny reports of Red Sea transit fees

    Yemen’s Houthi movement has rejected reports claiming it plans to charge commercial vessels for passing through the Red Sea, insisting that navigation through the strategic waterway remains free. In a statement issued by the Houthi-run Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center (HOCC), the group said its safe transit service for ships using the Bab al-Mandeb Strait is voluntary and does not involve any fees. It emphasized that no authorized Houthi body is collecting payments from shipping companies. The HOCC also warned shipping operators against making payments or sharing sensitive information with unauthorized individuals or organizations claiming to represent the group. It said any such demands are fraudulent and should not be recognized as official. The clarification came after recent reports suggested that the Houthis were considering introducing transit charges for vessels passing through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. The reports claimed the proposal had been discussed during meetings with Iranian officials and that plans were being explored to establish a system for regulating such payments. The Bab al-Mandeb Strait is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Thousands of commercial vessels carrying oil, fuel and other goods use the passage every year, making it a vital corridor for global trade between Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Security concerns in the Red Sea have remained high since attacks on commercial shipping began in late 2023. The conflict significantly disrupted international shipping, forcing many companies to divert vessels to longer and more expensive routes around southern Africa. Although attacks temporarily declined following a ceasefire last year, commercial traffic through the region has yet to return to previous levels. Shipping companies continue to monitor the security situation closely before routing vessels through the area. The latest reports have also prompted regional efforts to strengthen maritime security. Saudi Arabia recently announced a multinational maritime coalition aimed at protecting freedom of navigation in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
