Free Russian film screenings to be held at Centaur…

ISLAMABAD: Residents of Islamabad will have an opportunity to watch a selection of Russian films for free this weekend at Centaurus Mall.

The event, organised with the support of the Russian Embassy, will feature screenings of four Russian movies. Organisers said admission will be free, but seating will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The organisers clarified that the event is open to the general public and is not restricted to invited guests. No seats will be reserved for embassy officials, special guests or any particular group.

Visitors can choose to attend any of the four scheduled movie screenings. Families are also welcome to attend the event, providing they follow the age restrictions applicable to individual films.

Organisers have particularly advised visitors to check the age classification before attending. Two of the movies are intended exclusively for adult audiences and will not be suitable for children.

The film screenings are aimed at providing residents with an opportunity to experience Russian cinema and explore its cultural and artistic themes in an informal setting.

Visitors are also permitted to take photographs and record videos during the event. However, they have been requested to respect other audience members and avoid creating disturbances.

Guests have been asked not to use flashlights or make excessive noise while taking photographs or videos, so that the screenings can continue without disruption

    State Bank considers scrapping Rs10 banknote

    ISLAMABAD: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is considering discontinuing the Rs10 currency note as part of plans to introduce redesigned banknotes with enhanced security features, officials told the Senate Standing Committee on Finance. The committee met in Islamabad, where SBP Deputy Governor Dr Inayat Hussain briefed members on the proposed changes to the country’s currency notes. According to the deputy governor, the central bank is considering withdrawing the Rs10 note because its production cost has increased. He said the Rs10 denomination had been targeted for discontinuation twice in the past, but the attempts were unsuccessful. He clarified that the Rs10 note would be discontinued when the new series of currency notes is issued. Committee Chairman Senator Saleem Mandviwalla said the committee had previously asked the State Bank to replace all currency notes. Dr Inayat Hussain said the existing currency series had been in circulation since 2005. Officials told the committee that new banknotes would carry improved security features. The matter had been discussed twice by the federal cabinet. A committee formed by the cabinet had also proposed certain changes to the designs. The issue of the process used to select the company for designing the new notes also came under discussion. Chairman Saleem Mandviwalla questioned the decision to award the design work to the same company whose consultant had already been hired. He said no bidding process had been conducted before the design contract was awarded. Mandviwalla said the State Bank was an autonomous institution, but it still had to follow relevant rules and procedures. A State Bank executive director told the committee that the company associated with the consultant would carry out the entire assignment. The committee also questioned claims regarding the circulation of counterfeit currency in Pakistan. Dr Inayat Hussain said the circulation of counterfeit currency in the country was low. Mandviwalla asked the State Bank to provide data supporting the claim. The deputy governor further said public preference regarding banknote designs was also being taken into consideration. Senator Anusha Rehman remarked that people generally liked currency notes regardless of their design. Senator Shahzaib Durrani, however, said personal likes and dislikes should not be a factor in deciding currency designs. Dr Inayat Hussain told the committee that a subcommittee of the federal cabinet was currently reviewing the proposed new banknotes. He said the cabinet had made significant changes to the designs. The deputy governor said the new notes could only be introduced in the market after the proposed changes were finalised and approved. He also informed the committee that the proposed currency designs had been sent to the Ministry of Finance about a year ago.

    Gold prices in Pakistan surged sharply on Thursday, rising by Rs13,700 per tola as international bullion prices recorded a strong increase. The price of 10 grams of gold also climbed significantly, increasing by Rs11,746 to Rs404,609. The sharp increase in local gold prices came alongside a major rally in the international bullion market. International gold prices rose by $137 per ounce to $4,495, providing strong upward momentum to domestic prices. The latest increase follows significant fluctuations in Pakistan’s gold market over the past several trading sessions. On Wednesday, local gold prices had declined by Rs3,700 per tola despite a strong rise in international prices. The rate had fallen to Rs458,236 per tola, while 10 grams of gold were priced at Rs392,863. On Tuesday, gold prices remained unchanged at Rs461,936 per tola. Earlier on Monday, the precious metal had gained Rs2,000 per tola, reaching Rs461,936. The latest movement highlights the volatility currently being witnessed in the precious metals market. International bullion prices remain a key factor influencing gold rates in Pakistan, while local prices can also be affected by currency movements and domestic market conditions. Silver prices also recorded a substantial increase on Thursday. According to APGJSA figures, the price of silver rose by Rs317 per tola to Rs7,169. The price of 10 grams of silver also increased by Rs317 to Rs6,146. The sharp rise in gold prices is likely to attract renewed attention from investors, jewelers and consumers who closely monitor precious metal rates. Gold is often considered a store of value, making significant price movements particularly important for investors and households.
